OOo home depot discounts would be awesome!

I'm a graphic designer but had to take some electives not in my major so i did take one class on interior design. It was fun. sadly not very involved though. most was color theory you already learned in other undergrad design classes -_- kind of disappointing that way.

I've seen some uber fancy star-position correct glowy ceilings. I don't think it's dorky. If that's what you want, then that's what you should do when you can!

I have really expensive furniture. >.< It's been slowly collected over the years, and it's all been bought with my own money from money gifts over the years. That'll supplement my house or whatever for awhile till I can afford some more better stuff.

I'm pretty much the same way but not entirely. all my bedroom furniture was bought myself but then when my grandmother died she left me all of her dining room furniture. so the 16 (with leafs) walnut table with matching china hutch, server, buffet and bar are from her. they match my bedroom furniture though so it works out.

That's nice! I live a long way from where my grandmother lived, otherwise I would've taken some of her furniture (which was nice and no one else wanted).

I have a thing about not wasting money on junk, so I'll be relatively furniture-less while I save up the money for one piece at a time.

Sad that none wanted it and it was nice :( my grandma had a will so that was followed pretty closely (with plenty of bickering which made me completely dislike some of my family members). She had written that she left me everything she did because she thought i'd have a large family someday. I hope not! I only want 2 kids. if that...

For money stuffs, I'm the same way. I figure, if I'm going to spend money it might as well be exactly what I want. so I save for that instead of some middle ground. same with food... I never go out and eat at fas food places. I'd rather go out of a nice restaurant once or twice a year than all those individual times at cheap places all year long.

I have a thing for buying (good quality) things at thrift stores and garage sales. I think it comes from growing up poor. XD

But here....it doesn't feel like my house yet, even though I've been here six months, and so I'm not keen on changing things.
Plus that bedroom has an enormous California king bed in it, and there's not room for anything else really. If it had some color it would be nice though.

Free high quality furniture is pretty awesome! You might be pretty amazed what you find at the thrift store >.< I have a whole matching living room set that has lasted me many many years. It's a dark hunter green color though so when my kitty is out of her everything is a scrathing post phase I'll re upholster it. But I have gotten tons of amazingly good condition things (brooks brothers suit with the $400 tags still on it!) As far as silver and nick nacks it's great to, I find TONS of really cute antiques.

Color is a good quick fix for anything? Maybe a few coats of paint then kita? You can ask for a bunch of samples and paint little things for a few pops of color

there's one thrift store in this area. mostly just has clothes though no furniture. at least every time I went. I use it for costumes if I ever have classes that give me video projects.

but color makes a huge difference really. should try some. it will probably help it feel more like your space and it really isn't expensive.

oh how sad, there are at lest 7 thrift stores that I can get to easily. All but one gets furniture, and one is a dollar a pound for stuff, that place is dangerous, not for the wallet but trying to get it all home XD

@Empress: We didn't argue too much. Some, though. My grandma had a will, but as far as I know, it only divvied up money. We had to tell some of my family back where my gran lived "f you guys, we got NOTHING over the years, so you can give us this one damn thing." Which they did end up relinquishing the lamp I wanted (antique lamp that looks like a candle). I was supposed to get this piece of jewelry, too, but no luck on that yet. It's still in the works (she died recently).

I don't buy furniture thrift unless it's really nice. I buy a lot of crystal and such that way, though.

Yeah, that stuff's not right.

My family has an agreement that most of her stuff needs to stay in the family, and that's the most important thing, so things need to go to who will keep and take care of them.

I got some heirloomy stuff, but not the one thing I've been promised since I was five years old, and that's just crap. Hopefully it comes my way one way or another.

my grandma knew she was dying soon. she had so many health issues all related to being on dialysis for such a long time. so before she died she did give away a lot on her own for things like birthdays and christmas. she thought it would feel more special that way for us to get things from her when she was still here. which was true. I think I'll do the same if I'm fortunate enough to live that sort of long life and know when its ending.

My grandma was the same. She started giving stuff away in her last couple of years, but the big things that really meant a lot to people were also things that meant a lot to her, so she kept them, and we've had to argue over some of it because of that.

I hope, in a way, that I don't live as long as she did. 95 would be dreadful if you weren't like her and kept your mind until the end.

I don't know. I've had quite a few family members live until their late 90s/early 100s and they all seemed to keep their minds. So I'm hoping I follow in the same way. I think if I ever found out I had Alzheimer's or something i probably would just die at that point. To me that's one of the worst fates. I can't imagine having kids and someday looking at them like they are some stranger. But getting old itself, I'm not scared of. I want to be old someday and call kids whippersnappers and do crazy things like that. :P

Ely:: My family has fought so much since my grandpa died last year. Mainly because my grandpa only left a verbal will, no matter what my aunt says. My aunt has been a total greedy bitch, and its broken my mom's heart. They don't talk anymore and my aunt doesn't talk to me by extension.
My mom and aunt have apparently agreed to pretend they each don't exist to the other, because we all started to worry that my nana would have another heart attack.
Then my little brother got upset because my nana gave my aunt's son our grandpa's hunting rifle even though he told me himself that it was supposed to be for my brother when he died.
Its been a big mess.

sad but necessary to have iron clad wills these days for EVERYTHING even small nicknacks. and I think my family is proof that even in those cases, families will still fight. I don't see why. I honestly didn't care about any of it back then and still don't. I'd much rather have had my grandma then a dining table.
