I'll go with the theory that everyone is burned out from the event. And for a bunch of us, it wasn't about the prize, but the milestone. Sure, the prize was a nice carrot for people to chase after, but it wasn't the true goal for us.

But yeah . . . I expected it to die down after we hit 1,000 pages. . .
