The various customs with which people today celebrate their birthdays have a long history. Their origins lie in the realm of magic and religion. The customs of offering congratulations, presenting gifts, and celebrating -- complete with lighted candles-- in ancient times were meant to protect the birthday celebrant from the demons and to ensure his security for the coming year.. Down to the forth century Christianity rejected the birthday celebration as a pagan custom.

:x

Not to mention how egotistical it is to celebrate your own birth. :/

Well a lot of pagan societies are the ones that started birthday parties, before them they didn't celebrate it.

There's a lot of things, I"ll try googling it and finding some info for you.

EDIT:
Nevermind Isabella found it. XD

And whats bad in that? x3In the end, it was to make the celebrater happy and protect them. I think people do far too little lately to bring smile on other people faces and make sure they are safe.

Well you know it's all in belief systems really.

7th day Adventists don't celebrate anything with a party, it's against their beliefs because celebrations the way most of us celebrate are pagan, so you know it's just a religious thing.

It's cool . . . and it works.

I actually have to go.
As much as I'd like to finish this conversation, seeing if my car is salvageable is more important.

I'm debating whether to spend the large amount of money for a 'quality' set of jewelry pliers that will reduce stress on my hands - even though the cost makes my head spin

Or stick with the ones I have, and deal with my little finger getting numb every once in a while.

I hate to say it, but the more expensive ones will probably last longer as well as prevent numbness . . .

I'd go with those. XD

To be perfectly honest, the most misunderstood pagan holiday is Christmas. If you wanted to get technical, the only mainstream religion which follows the ancient customs of true christianity, or catholicism, is Jehovah's Witnesses.

Celebrating the day you were born is harmless.

Not to cause a debate, but no matter what Religious beliefs you have, any celebration in which people can come together and enjoy the company of others is good.

To focus on what is bad because someone else does it merely feeds segregation and separation. Celebrations exist to bring people together, and whether that goes against your beliefs or not, brotherhood and sisterhood is what is most important, and will always be.

The jewelry things Jezriel is talking baout. D:

Personally, I always stick to cheaper things, but if they make it too hard and stressful, even the high cost could be worth it.

I just hate spending that much money since I haven't sold many of my finished necklaces yet. I'd like to say it's an investment, but what if I never sell very many? Then it's just money I shouldn't have spent. Grrr.

30-40$ for ONE pair of pliers is pretty hefty, that makes 60-80$ for one for each hand.

This is so totally my philosophy on stuff too!! I mean come on, let's make each other happy if we're stuck here on this earth in troublesome times.

I'm not saying go out and do a bunch of bad stuff, but the little things that make people happy are what count in my book. :D

I agree with Wolfie. ^^ Christmas certainly is so far from its origins as possible, yet, people celebrate it. And like I said, I think not commercialized celebration, which is not all about gifts, as much as having fun with friends and family, being together with them, like my party is supposed to be, is nothing against any religion. Is having fun against it? D: EDIT: Or ratehr showing your lvoe for your dear ones?

Well, I am not going to get into debate about it, I respect Kisakis opinion and everyone elses too. ^^

Well they have get togethers and stuff . . . it's just not celebrating. you know they visit and stuff and are together, just not cake and candles and presents and all . . . .

It's not like they live as hermits or anything. XD
