Its easy to get a decent amount of gold from the fishing game, I always get 20+ a play,

Yay for snuggles . . . I've been snuggling my toy polar bear since I got it for Christmas. It's so totally soft and the material is all silky. :D

Okay maybe I just don't understand the finer mechanics of the game . . . pointers?

You gotta hook the fish in specific places to catch them, usually in the mouth, though I find the octopus' catchpoint is nearer the middle of their head (near the top) and you need to catch more than one in one go if possible for bonus points,

Yeah the most I've managed so far is 3 in one go and that was luck too, but its pretty easy to get gold fast because its 2 minutes of play each time,
