Festive Foods: It's Beginning To Taste A Lot Like Christmas!

I love how this year's event is centered around one of my favourite holiday traditions; baking!
Every year I love to bake lots of cakes and cookies for presents and for when visitors come over. I also love making mulled wine, it makes the whole house smell so nice and festive! I even love making a huge Christmas Dinner with the hubby.

So tell me; have you made anything nice this year, or do you plan to?
What're you having for Christmas Dinner? Who's making it?
Feel free to share any of your favourite recipes, but please remember to put your recipes in quote tags if you haven't devised them yourself.
Ooh, and pictures! We all love a bit of food porn, right?

My brother and I just made a couple batches of sugar cookies tonight. We haven't decorated them yet though, I"m guessing we'll wait until the afternoon when he gets up.:sarcasm:

My mom did a bunch of baking this year peanut brittle, candy cane bark, cherry balls, almond thingys, and ginger sparklers.

Christmas dinner is going to be the standard turkey, stuffing, yam, salad type meal. My parents will be doing most of the cooking and I'll help out a bit where they want me (aka the young wine and the salad).

Just yesterday I made gingerbread houses with 3 of my best friends. :]

My friend and I made the dough, and I kneaded it (which btw, is extremely fun) and then we chilled it and made models out of cardboard for how we wanted our walls and roofs, and then once the dough had chilled long enough, I gradually rolled out some, piece by piece, and put out the walls and what not, and we put them in one sheet at a time. I did that for soo long. @[email protected];; And then my friends fixed the icing while I still worked with the gingerbread. And then while I kept cutting more out, they set to making their houses. I was so behind. T^T I was the last one to finish mine, and that wasn't until the other three left to drop one of them off. I'm rather pleased with how ours all turned out, though. We each made our own small house, and they were all so unique. They took most of the little props, though, before I got the chance to work on mine, so mine was pretty sparse compared to theirs. ;~; Was super fun day, though! I want to knead more dough. lol

Robard 12-24-2009 09:56 AM

Ayy, this thread is making me hungry.

I hope to make gingerbread cookies while I'm home on break--I haven't in years, but it's so much fun! And they keep pretty well, so I have a steady supply of cookies for the next week or so.
Christmas dinner (weather permitting) will be my grandmother's stuffed shells, and a smorgasbord of different desserts by whichever family members feel like making them.

Cherish 12-24-2009 09:58 AM

Oh my gosh, Suona! Gingerbread houses?
I've always loved the look of them, but still haven't braved making one myself yet. I don't think my building skills are up to scratch.

Every year I make shortbread cookies and sugar cookies. We cut the sugar cookies into shapes, then my brother, sister and I decorate them with frosting/sprinkles/candy/etc. It's fun, and we've done it every year since I can remember.
My mom usually makes other sweets as well, though it varies every year.

On Christmas Eve we usually have family come over and visit, and so they bring over lots of appetizer and finger-food type things, as well as my mom making food too. I'm pretty excited because this year my mom is making lobster chip dip, and it's amazing.

Also on Christmas eve the past few years I've been going to my boyfriends house for supper. They always have a lobster dinner on Christmas Eve, and it's amazing. Lobster is my favourite food. ^^

Christmas day is when we have our normal turkey dinner (turkey, potatoes, stuffing/dressing, cranberry sauce, peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, turnip, etc...) at mom's house. My mom's parents come over for supper that night.

On boxing day my step-mom's family has their turkey dinner as well, so my siblings and I go to that. Yay for having divorced parents and getting double or more of everything!

Suona 12-24-2009 12:28 PM

@ Cherish - Its so easy to make, though! And the dough is so much fun to knead. Its all squishy. Haha.

Its actually a lot of fun. Once you just get all the walls made and then stick them together, you get to decorate it however you want! Its definently something you should do at least once in your life.

I'm not going to be cooking christmas dinner. we don't usually have a traditional dinner. I think we're opting for finger foods this year. But I am going to be making four different kinds of fudge!

akinmytua 12-24-2009 02:59 PM

My family made pazelles... and no, I don't think that is the correct spelling. Anyway, they are these waffle-like thingys that are anise flavored. Technically... I didn't make them, my sister did. I cleaned containers... Baking is not my forte.... But I loved eating the little bits they trim off edges!

kaihkc 12-24-2009 03:04 PM

i have no idea!!
btw CUTE BABY!!!

Cherish 12-24-2009 03:10 PM

Suona: Really? It always looks difficult. I'll have to give it a go.

Kaihkc: Thanks! She's very excited about her first Christmas.

Every Christmas, my mother bakes like 5,000 cookies, and this year is no exception. XD; I've helped with the chocolate chips, the M&M chips, the Mexican Wedding cookies, and the peanut butter blossoms (basically peanut butter cookie dough formed into balls and baked, and then you press a Hershey kiss into the center of each). And she's also made almond&raisin shortbreads, brown sugar shortbread puffs, and apricot koloche.

They're all DELICIOUS, man.

The Enchanted Tiara 12-24-2009 03:20 PM

We don't bake sweets so much on Christmas because my Mom is a diabetic and so we don't want to tempt her too much, but anyone who ever gives my family cookies and things I always love to DEATH. It's so awesome when people do things like that for you on Christmas. I appreciate it so much.

Anyway, my Mom is making a nice turkey dinner, a lot like you have on Thanksgiving though and I'm really looking forward to it.

This thread is making me drool by the way.

We didn't bake much this year, we travelled over 3500km to be with my family for christmas.
we will have a large turkey dinner and pumpkin pie. I made ultimate chocolate chip cookies and ginger cookies, the 2 favorites in my family.
I am just glad to be with family!

My family tried to make ginger bread... but since I have a brother with celiac (person who can't eat gluten which is in flour). We couldn't use normal flour. So we tried to use Gluten-free flour!
We didn't have any, unfortunately.
So we decided to substitute that with a gluten-free bread mix.
We found one that looked okay and mixed it in.
It was only until after we tried the batter that we found out that the bread mix we had used was a RYE bread mix and had seed that made the gingerbread SPICY.
The cookies were not tasty... T_T

I baked shortbread cookies with my little (nearly 3!) brother yesterday and he decorated them all with blood red icing (all over his fingers and there was no mercy on his lovely jumper) and sprinkles, which he ate most of <3 I've also been enjoying Stollen! Yum!

Condemned Citrus 12-24-2009 08:18 PM

Mince pie is pretty good...
If it doesn't explode.
(my sister said later that she didn't MEAN to put it in the freezer before it cooled down)

SuperPotpurri 12-24-2009 08:19 PM

I forget what my mom said she'll probably make XDD;;;;
I'm not a cooking kind of person;
my favorite thing to eat during the winter holidays is Caramel popcorn <33 *Q*
and some hot cocoa is always nice too~

CuddlyQuiche 12-24-2009 08:23 PM

Exploding Mince Pies? Omg o.o that must of been a frightful mess!! I hope no one got burnt or anything :/ I've broken a glass doing that though >.< First left to chill in freezer but someone took it out and I used it with tea Dx and it cracked horribly!

sidrabutterfly 12-24-2009 09:43 PM

During the holidays my mom makes awesome Jello. It's usually peach flavored, and she adds home whipped cream to one, and cream cheese to the other. She then also adds some peaches to it. It's so tasty! I like the whipped cream variety better, or mixing the two.
