As much as I direly want to "compete" in this challenge, I've yet to really begin a reading list. There's always something that interrupts, such as school (textbooks really obliterate the motivation to read) or work. By the time I want to read, I don't see a point to it.

Although, I did begin reading Canterbury Tales, which I find hilarious.
I'd like to finish it sometime.

Dream_and_Die 12-25-2009 05:41 PM

Ah the Canterbury Tales, I need to finish that. I started it in high school but graduated before I could finish it (it was the schools copy).

Knerd 12-25-2009 06:19 PM

Every time I think of The Canterbury Tales, I think of a particular episode of Daria. Her school decides to hold a Renaissance Festival and Quinn ends up playing the part of the Wife of Bath, I believe?

Phoenixxangel 12-25-2009 06:36 PM

I have lots of books I want to read and re-read! =3 Currently I'm reading popcorn by ben elton. I'm almost half way through it and I started it yesterday =p

Studying does definitely ruin the want to read... My uni semester's over and I've started reading again. It also helps being in my parents new house =3 my rooms big with a nice comfy armchair and lots of pillows. I just sank into it last night and read for hours... I'll defo be doing the same before bed tonight with a good movie playing in the background =3

SO back to books XD I want to finish popcorn and another fantasy book I started... As well as re-reading the darren shan books and finishing the new anne rice book I just got... angels something or other (yes im terrible at names!!)

Anyone have any good recomendations? I want to expand my reading list!!

did you specifically ask for a nook or just an ereader?
because they may have given you a kindle since the nook is so backed up and you wouldn't have gotten it for christmas. (but we totally give little present-type packages with a picture of a nook that say it'll come soon. :/ )

you know. the nook let's you lend books once with one person. though i have no clue what's going on with the nook in UK. i think they said they're focusing on the us market first. or something like that. XD

HA~ we're in the same boat. i haven't read nearly as much as i used to since i started working at b&n.

what'd you do to get into receiving? i totally want to work back there, but they plopped me on the book floor and cashwrap. :c

usually when you transfer, they try to squeeze you in or find another store with openings close by. i believe there are five b&n within a half hour of where i live.
and if you do a good job at your first store, they'll probably put in a good word for you. :3

Though when she moved they did transfer her.

hey, i went in during a job fair when they were looking for employees. and i only started off seasonal, then i got to part time.
now i'm seasonal again. ;_;
they don't have enough hours for me to work normal part time. :c

I read Eragon, and I forgot it. I know its normal to forget specifics after awhile and mix some things up, but I can not tell you the main characters name. I couldn't tell you the plot either, other then a boy finds a dragon and it rare (I think).

haha, i forgot most of eragon until i saw the (really bad) movie on disney channel.
and uh. the main character's name is eragon. the dragon is sapphira. or. however they spelled it.

what was stopping you from taking it? XD

AND LASTLY, to the original topic bits.
it doesn't seem that i got any books for christmas, but i did get a giftcard. to borders.
i love my family, but i don't think they quite understand the awkwardness of a barnes & noble employee walking into a borders.
and i got a good bit of money since no one knows what to get me. (i don't know why, i ask for simple things.)

i'm still working on pride and prejudice and zombies, but i seem to have left it work when i left last time. :c
and since i didn't want to give strep to everyone i haven't gone back in, so i started a new book while i was at the doctor's.
it's called boneshaker. and it is somewhat awesome so far.
what can possibly go wrong with a book about steampunk and zombies?
i mean. aside from total disaster. but it seems pretty trustworthy.

Knerd 12-25-2009 06:45 PM

Before I recommend books, I feel like I always have to ask two questions: What are your favorite genres? And how old are you?

Because I know that the books I like are usually pretty different from everyone else's favorites, so I wouldn't want to recommend you something that you'd hate.

Dream_and_Die 12-25-2009 06:49 PM

@leenie: I only took books from the school after I handed mine in (because of the list I didn't want to pay) and only if I could find them. After I handed mine in they put them away somewhere... I couldn't find them, trust me I tried.

Also... HOLY CRAP YOUR ON!

Phoenixxangel 12-25-2009 06:52 PM

okies =3 I like fantasy, horror (gothic horror, not just scary stuff... anne rice kinda thing but different writing styles =p) and fiction. Anything a little bit gothic or original.

I'm 20 =3 (only just xD)

Why, wehat would you rate as your fav books? im interested in odd books! =D

Knerd 12-25-2009 07:03 PM

Okay, I think you'd like:
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell Book by Susanna Clarke
Lord Vishnu's Love Handles: A Spy Novel (Sort Of) by Will Clarke
Alphabet of Thorn by Particia McKillip
In the Forests of Serre by Patricia McKillip (A lot of her books are pretty well written fantasy, so if you like one, check out the others)
Egalia's Daughters: A Satire of the Sexes by Gerd Brantenberg

And Here are all of my favorite books. I use Goodreads as a kind of virtual bookshelf, so it makes it much easier for me to organize my collections. These are all of my 5/5 star books.

Phoenixxangel 12-25-2009 07:15 PM

I'm reading that susanna clarke novel at the mo and I'm loving it XD haha I'll most definitely have a peek at those other books =3 concidering your first suggestion is something im already reading and enjoyingh im hoping the rest on the small list are just as good XD

Oooh I shall check out your reading list...

*reads*

i recognised Illiad and Perfume =p otherwise I have no idea what those other books are o.o are you very interested in all the more intelectual ones naturally or are they for work reading? Cos if you like them im impressed! I wish I had the interest and motivation to read books with actual information in them! lol!!

Dream_and_Die 12-25-2009 07:16 PM

My favorite books are The Phantom of the Opera and The Picture of Dorian Grey. They both play a bit into the horror style. ^_^

You could also try
The Oran Trilogy by Midori Snyder
Hawkspar by Holly Lisle
Goth: A novel of Horror by Otsuichi

tirethminet 12-25-2009 07:21 PM

I guess you could call me a "quality over quantity" kind of person. I love books that really get my gears turning. If I can walk away from it knowing that I've pushed myself and learned from the writing, then I'm happy. :)

Iltu 12-25-2009 10:10 PM

AIEEE. I got $120 to Half-Price Books for Christmas. X3 I cannot WAIT to put this to good use! I'll have so many books to read...

amyrex2 12-25-2009 10:16 PM

Turns out my husband and I also got a gift card to barnes and noble. He was hiding it...smiles..in his wallet.

Iltu 12-25-2009 10:19 PM

Amy- Nice! :) I love Barnes and Noble. Any ideas about what you're gonna use it on?

pandora duprie 12-25-2009 10:21 PM

I'm reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman right now, I didn't get any books for Christmas this year, Might buy Dean Koont's New book Relentless soon.

Iltu 12-25-2009 10:23 PM

I seriously need to read some Neil Gaiman, and right soon! Is American Gods the first book you've read by him?
Ah, Dean Koontz! <3 Love him. Is he a favorite of yours?

Blazestorm 12-25-2009 11:27 PM

No new books for me under the tree... should've thought to send a couple on my list to Santa (but I've been busy with other things XD)

Kindle ... I don't like reading large amounts of text on a screen. I think it would drive me batty before too long - and I spend far too much time staring at the computer to begin with!

Knerd 12-25-2009 11:46 PM

It's awesome that so many of you guys got gift cards - That's really the way to go. I always hate buying people books because I don't know what they have or what they've already read. It's one of those things that's really tough to pick out unless you know the person intimately.

I've never watched much of Daria, just enough to laugh at the thought of Quinn playing the Wife of Bath. Although, it probably suits her best.

I enjoyed all the characters from that collection of stories.

Knerd 12-26-2009 12:16 AM

I only got interested in Daria recently. My house never had cable television when it was actually on the air.

I've downloaded all the episodes and just sat down to watch them one by one. The only reason I remember them so clearly is because I just finished the last season.

RisikaFox 12-26-2009 12:25 AM

Yay! I made out good this year as far as books are concerned. ^^ I got several books I've been wanting to read, and $45 in Borders gift cards. Some highlights: Stardust by Niel Gaiman, Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones, and An Acceptable Time by Madeleine L'Engle.

Also, I finally got around to updating my list and realized I'm over the halfway point already. My first book of the new year will probably be Stardust, which I will follow up with re-watching the movie to compare the two.

Knerd 12-26-2009 12:33 AM

Howl's Moving Castle is a cute little book. If you've ever seen the movie, it's much more fleshed out and descriptive in that. The characters are a bit different, but I think that they're personalities are stronger in the book. Sophie is, anyway.
