It was a very odd book- my women in liteature teacher and I have had a lot of conversations about things we're still trying to peice together.

Same here. I think I'll have to revisit the novel within the next couple years. The entire thing was very dark and left me in a rather bad mood, but I have the feeling that was just because many of the better parts sailed straight over my head.

I got Unseen Academicals (the latest Discworld book) and the first Inspector Wallander book for Christmas.

While I've been home I've picked up some books and comics too to read next year.

Knerd 12-26-2009 06:45 PM

Discworld sounds like such a fun series. That's another one I'm going to have to get from my library.

GoCloud! 12-26-2009 09:14 PM

Ooh I don't think I've read even ten books this year @[email protected]

I am reading Arthas: Rise of the Lich King though..xD

Guivre 12-26-2009 09:24 PM

Ooo. I could go for a good liche king right now. =D This is so TMI, but I have one of those Warmaster undead armies that I just basically bought to paint. Little animated skellies are too cute. But that's another holiday event, really.

Whimzica 12-26-2009 09:59 PM

*wanders in* I havent finished any books lately, but I did just pick up the Divine Comedy a bit ago. I read it a long time ago, but dont really remember it well so I'm going to read it again.

Knerd 12-26-2009 11:47 PM

Dante is quite fun. There are so many interpretations of his work that it's a pretty interesting journey to read through his original piece. Sometimes you just don't realize how many people he's influenced!

shadowfoot 12-27-2009 09:38 AM

I received some gaming handbooks for Christmas, but no other books. I did however give some books for Christmas.

Robard 12-27-2009 10:43 AM

Ooh, a new Discworld book? I will have to get my hands on a copy...

No books or gift certificates this year, alas, but while I'm home I intend to resume my summer reading: I need to finish The Alchemist and The Count of Monte Cristo, and I've been meaning to read the rest of The Story of Edgar Sawtelle since two summers ago. D:

I feel like I'm really slacking off as a reader since starting college--time was I always finished books within a few days of starting them, but now I'm halfway through a million and a half great books and I have no idea if or when I'll get to the ends.

Chalkboard 12-27-2009 11:01 AM

@Robard - I know how you feel. I used to finish books within the next few days (or even the same day) of receiving it, now it takes me at least a week for the smaller ones, since I only have time to read in bed ;_;

I got five books for Christmas - Stephen King's "Cell" (which I'm reading right now, I think it's excellent) Lisa Jackson's "Fatal Burn" and three Patricia Cornwell books - "All That Remains", "From Potter's Field" and "The Body Farm".

Legos on the floor 12-27-2009 01:27 PM

I've only read, maybe, five books all year (I've been reading a lot less since I've started working), but I've been given Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters for Christmas. I haven't read Sense and Sensibility in it's unaltered form yet, but this is still good.

I've also been craving Sherlock Holmes (I blame the movie for reminding me) and Akira lately for some reason, I'll probably get back into them soon.

Zilithandria Moonlight 12-27-2009 01:49 PM

This year, I've read Star Trek books, manga, comics, and graphic novels. ^^

Hey, comics and manga and graphic novels count. [/{.}_{.}\]

Okay, well, MANGA AND GRAPHIC NOVELS count, anyway. =P

Yes, they do! (/*_*\)

Says me!! =_=

^Ahahaha, I bet your reaction was funny!! :XD
But it's still trueee, like it or nooot~ :XD

Anyhoo... I even read Watchmen. >_>'

If I read anything else, I can't remember it at the moment. X3

Zarq 12-27-2009 01:54 PM

I didn't receive any books for Christmas, but right now I'm reading Brightly Burning by Mercedes Lackey. She's one of my favorite authors, I have almost all of her books about Valdemar -- and I read them about once a year so I'm fairly sure I've read at least 50 books this year.

Tomorrow though, I'm going to the thrift store and looking for books. I love thrift stores/goodwills for books -- you can always find something good there and for 25 or 50 cents a book, you just can't go wrong. =)

I love the Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell, when I finish Brightly Burning (which is the last book about Valdemar that I have) that's the series I intend to read next. Unfortunately, I can't find my copy of Postmortem anyway and that's one of the books I'm hoping to find tomorrow.

Zilithandria Moonlight 12-27-2009 01:55 PM

Zarq, check for Nancy Drew! I will force you to read Nancy Drew if I have to do so! I'm spreading the love of Nancy Drew! And you can't stop me!! :XD

*Hime* 12-27-2009 01:56 PM

I bought like several 'selfish pigs' books for my friends xD
They are so funny c:

Zilithandria Moonlight 12-27-2009 01:57 PM

Selfish pigs? What are those books about?

AND HIIIIIII HIME!!! =D

Legos on the floor 12-27-2009 02:03 PM

Zilithandria -- You're not the only one, I'm counting manga (and graphic novels) too.

Well, Even if not, Akira in and of itself should count as book in my opinion. v.v

Zarq 12-27-2009 02:05 PM

@Zilithandria Moonlight: Ok, I surely will look. I've seen a movie recently about Nancy Drew, but I don't think I've read any books. I'll read just about anything -- so if I find some I'll pick them up!

Zilithandria Moonlight 12-27-2009 02:10 PM

@Legos: Yay, cool, thanks! I'm glad I'm not the only one!! :D
What ones are you currently reading? =3

@Zarq: NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO!!!! NOT THE NANCY DREW MOVIES!!!! :o
Lol, sorry - the books came first, and the movies (there are at least 2 movies) and series, since they don't follow the books, are of no consequence. The books that are REALLY good are the ones in the Nancy Drew Mysteries series of 52 books; the reason I say this is because there are at least 2 other Nancy Drew book series, one set when she was a kid, and one called Notebook something or other. :XD

Cami 12-27-2009 02:17 PM

My sister-in-law wrote a persuasive paper for college asserting that Nancy Drew had an eating disorder and using evidence from the book series.

Legos on the floor 12-27-2009 02:17 PM

Currently... Hm, I'd say Hellsing, but I still need to pick up the latest book, so I'm at a standstill there. I haven't had a lot of spare money to spend this year, and it's all been going to music.
I'm determined to finally go pay my overdue library fees and revisit some old ones, though.

Zilithandria Moonlight 12-27-2009 02:20 PM

@Cami: What? Seriously? How does that work out??

@Legos: OMGosh yay it's not jst me who has library fines blocking my card, either.... :XD
But what can we really say, anyway? We just love books. :XD

Cami 12-27-2009 02:26 PM

Well, she was a public health major, so she probably knew what she was talking about. I've never actually read the paper. I think it discussed such things as how she always refused food (so you never actually saw her eating in the books, but often saw her choosing not to eat) and how she considered her friend to be "plump" but when she was on the cover, she appeared to be a perfectly normal weight.

Zilithandria Moonlight 12-27-2009 02:27 PM

@Cami: We don't know that for sure; maybe Bess was good at hiding her weight? Also, sometimes artwork doesn't carry with the story or music. Also, there were times in the books when she was at the table, eating a meal (that was cooked by Hannah) with her father, too. What about then? Plus there were the times she and her friends went to eat. I don't know what series your sister-in-law was reading, but in the original 52-book series, she did eat. I mean, just because the author didn't dedicate a whole page on what was being eaten, but instead focused more on the mystery... besides, it really only takes a sentence at most to describe what's being eaten. Seriously. I do it all the time, since I keep writing even though I never finish my stories... But anyway, if it was a cook book that was being produced, I could see the point in your sister-in-law's paper, but... 0_0'

Legos on the floor 12-27-2009 02:32 PM

Exactly! Y'know what, we are generously providing funding by letting our books go overdue. Totally on purpose.:P Someone has to pay the library.

@ Other conversation -- Come on, haven't you ever read Brian Jaques? You have to dedicate entire chapters to food and meals. Otherwise your characters just aren't appreciating it enough. :XP
