Yeah, i'll usually just say that i'll be afk for awhile or that I may not reply if I have any chats up. I feel bad if I come back and it turns out that I was being talked to. I know that when people never respond to me, I feel like i'm annoying them and then I feel bad and wont really talk much. So if I go to do stuff, then i'll usually set my status' to away, or I have them programmed to change to "away" as soon as I've been innactive for 5 minutes or more.

Yeah, i've done that before. I just go away from the computer for a moment to grab something (which I do all the time, so I try not to say brb every few moments), and then sometimes i'll get distracted and take longer than was expected.

Eggnog is good, but its so damn thick that I can only drink a little at a time.

There is a program you can download I think for MSNM. You put the settings to leave a message for a person when they message you, but you're not around. Like, "Sorry, Jennifer is away at the moment." or something like that.
