It's okay - you don't have to open it - I have some active donation requests up - the parents at this "new school" I'm at (this is my second year here) don't like to support the school it seems. all teachers here have a hard time getting donations. I can't even get the kids to pay 6 dollars for their chorus t-shirt or 5 dollars for their recorders. It's crazy. I tell them, "All you have to do is circle financial aid requested" and I will buy one for you...and I still can't get more that 75% of the forms back from the parents.

They don't even want to turn the paper in because they don't think it's necessary for their child. Your kid has to do work sheets when everyone else does recorder? Oh well, they don't care. Your kid is the only one in chorus without the correct uniform? Oh well, they don't care. They just deem it all unnecessary and won't even circle the request for financial aid. I get when it's a pride thing...I have helped a few students when I KNOW their parent refuses to turn it in because they are ashamed of asking for help - but most of the parents are like "Hell no...my kid doesn't need any of that stuff. Chorus/Strings/Orff...it's just free babysitting - we aren't ACTUALLY going to perform at the concerts, pfft."

I got screamed at on the last day of the school year last year because a girl rented a violin for the year and hadn't turn it in. I had called her to my room TWO times the last 2 weeks of school saying, "please get it in. you signed a contract that you would pay for the ENTIRE violin if it disappeared...I don't want to charge you 500 dollars....please get it in." Except...of the 2 times I called her in, I only talked to her once about it because the second time she came to me in tears because she had gotten a "C" in math and said her parents were going to leave her home while the rest of the family went on vacation. So I spent the next 10 minutes talking to her, helping her calm down, then sent her back to class.

So I basically talked to her ONCE about it.

WEEELLLL...dad called the school on the last day of school screaming about how I am HARASSING the girl and that I better knock it off or he will be taking legal action.

I talked to my AP who said she would handle it because, fuck that, I'm not dealing with that on summer break. I came back after the summer and of course, the violin never got returned and the girl was never charged. We basically lost a 500 dollar violin because his child probably put it somewhere, lost it or broke it, and he doesn't want to take responsibility.

So of course it was MY fault.

The parents (and even some of the kids) at this school are crazy.

Oh that's terrible. Everybody is so litigation happy these days. Never mind teaching your kid responsibility. she won't need it in the real world

No, of course not. Dad will probably call up her future boss and scream at her too if she reprimands the girl.

My Principal was selected to open up a STEAM choice school in my district next year. I had talked to her BEFORE I knew she had applied letting her know I wanted to apply because it would be AMAZING to work at a STEAM school that focuses on hands-on, etc. That's the way I teach...hands-on, authentic music experiences for my students while connecting back to math, reading, history, and science.

She and I had had a LONG conversation about how she thinks I would be perfect at that school and that she would miss me and that she still talks to everyone about how I am literally the only person she has literally hired on the spot.

Then I found out she is going to be the school's principal.

We can't apply until May but I know she loves me and hopefully that means I will get the job there. And at a choice school in my district, parents have to put in a minimum of 20 hours volunteer a semester...that would be a HUGE help in my program!

I hope you get it!

And I hate parents like that. That's really messed up they didn't know what happened to the violin.
