Hmm, he's probably gay. I'm curious though, what evidence have you come up with that points to that?
I definitely agree with you, there is no problem whatsoever. Being gay is normal behavior and people need to get over it. At least, that's my opinion.

First clue is that just about through the entire series, there are almost no female characters, just mainly old ladies-- the opera singer which captain haddock shys away from.

Tintin's past is a total mystery, doesn't speak of family at all which in gay men for the time would have been common.

2. He moves in the country mansion of bachelor middle aged sailor Captain Haddock for almost indefinitely.

3. Also the hint at some subtle and some blunt instances of racism according to some other sources may even point that the author Herge himself was a closet or latent homosexual.

4. In one point in the series Captain Haddock himself claims he would die for Tintin, the love they share is more than friendship. I know they refer Tintin as a 17 year old but he really comes off more of a 19 - 23 year old actually.

5. Tintin cries about Chang in one story, I know this means nothing but you can tell Tintin is very emotional when it comes to Chang-- the boy he rescued in the blue lotus i'm guessing maybe 16- 18?

6.Captain haddock is very protective of Tintin.

Those all sounds very reasonable. Now that you mention it I can't even think of any female characters, except for old ladies. I didn't even notice that.
I really need to finish the series, I love it so much. And I really want to get the comics.

I just added a few more reasons in the previous post. If you watch the movie you see more and more undertones of homosexuality, not just in Tintin, but Thompson and Thompson who are not related but are attached to the hip. In the beginning of the movie one undertone of gayness comes out when Tintin about falls and one of the Thompsons catches him by the thigh and keeps his hand there a bit longer than normal. I caught that the second time I watched it. Captain Haddock seems to grow more and more fond of tintin as the story progresses and he becomes more touchy feely with him which of course tintin does not seem to mind. At the end of the movie you get the feeling that the captain of course would support any of tintin's endeavor's whether emotionally or financially. It's like a fairy tale ending... it is cute though.

It really pains me though when people get mad about other people think he's gay, folks need to realize that back then of course it would have been well closeted but was still really common.

Yes, those are also really good reasons. I'll have to rewatch the movie and pay attention to that. Do you remember when Haddock said what he did in reason #5. I'm curious. That does seem cute. Man I wish I owned the movie. I'm lucky that Netflix has the series on instant.

Ugh people get mad about everything. They just need to chill their grills.

hummy 11-05-2012 11:04 PM

i agree,live and let live!

Kole_Locke 11-05-2012 11:05 PM

Reason 5 was more about tintin crying about chang whom he had met in the previous story and it seemed kind of odd that he had such an emotional and powerful connection with Chang. Captain Haddock admires tintin's devotion but you can't help just to notice in the captain's expression a small bit of jealousy. Chang is much closer to tintin's age of course and if it was like that the captain must have felt really threatened by chang.

I don't remember the exact quote but the captain swore he would protect tintin even if it meant sacrificing himself.

I guess the reason I kind of like this relationship other than the fact that haddock is a bit too old for tintin, is the way it is kind of in a romantic fashion rather than the usual gay stereotype smut that you see sometimes.

@Hummy - I would really just like to see something with a happy ending of two gay men who are able to romantically show their love without it just being plain smut.

You should also see the movie titled "Total Eclipse" with leonardo diCaprio and the guy who played defense of dark arts in Harry potter 3 teacher who was a werewolf.

did tintin get protected?

Kasumi Ocada 11-05-2012 11:16 PM

I'm back!

One of my daughters has extra homework to do tonight. *sigh*

Yes, in the series captain haddock comes to tintin's rescue more than once. It's almost as if in some scenes tintin is the damsel in distress and haddock is the brave and brash knight that saves the day. They are doing a sequel, I imagine the subtleties will still be there.

Oh, derp. I meant reason 4. My bad.
Yeah, I understand. Their relationship is pretty sweet. Yeah the smut thing can get pretty annoying. Like to an extent, whatever. But when so many homosexual relationships are portrayed as revolving around just smut, it's a bit ridiculous.
