Hooooboy. Since I'm moving and have to pack, I've been going through all my books and weeding out the ones that I know I'm never going to read, so now I have to update my whole reading list to take them out. On the upside, since the ones I'm removing are all non-fiction, that means more room for sci-fi and fantasy, yay!

Blue Eyed: you might check out the rest of Vonnegut's books then, I would especially recommend Cat's Cradle.

Skrae - Thanks! I've been told to do that before by teachers. I just never got around to it. I had a friend who loved Kurt Vonnegut so much, he cried for a whole day when he died.

It is a very good book, and my personal favorite of his. :3

Also, for sheer historical value, Frankenstein, and Dracula both are worth at least one read. Oh! and they recently completed and printed the partial sequel to Drakky that Stoker had written! I haven't managed to get ahold of it yet, but I do plan to.

it is sad when the writters we love die or decided not to write any more. I fear I will be saddened when the writer of xanth dies.

I felt the urge to pop in at the mention of crying when authors die; the author of the novel I just finished committed suicide nearly two years ago and towards the end of the book, when I was thinking about how affecting the novel was and how much the author Got It I teared up when I started considering that there would never be anything more by him.

Some novels hit you so hard your head spins. Some authors somehow connect with you on a level you didn't know existed. It's like losing a close friend. Friggin' tragic.

I only have one novel I really cry on and that is the MYST book because his poor cat dies. can you believe that I cry for a fictional cat?

Even though everyone died eventually, it seems particularly sad to me when writers and artists die, because they spend their whole life devoted to making beautiful and moving things, and it's always a sad thing to lose such people.

I got to see Ursula Le Guin (my absolute favorite author) in person this weekend, and just being in the same room as her was so overwhelming and wonderful that it made me cry, so I know that when she dies, I am probably going to be in mourning for a long time.

so your going to end up like Queen Victoria? in black for the rest of your life? not making a joke about it. I understand when Mercedes Lackey dies I am going to be morning for her. I got to meet her and her hansom hubby years ago. I would like to meet them again. also got to meet the author of the Anite Blake series. sadly I was not able to get out to meet Jim Butcher when he was up here. I had a steampunk meet up.

Hehe, no I probably wont wear black for the rest of my life, but I will cry a lot, and very very sad for a while. Her work has changed my life more deeply than any other, so losing her will be a blow to me. Then again, her work will always remain, ever ready to be re-read, so in some ways she (any every other author) is effectively immortal, haha.

I have to confess that I haven't read very many sci-fi books. I've got fantasy novels everywhere... but I think the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is about the only sci-fi that I can consciously remember reading.

Any good recommendations for the next time I hit the book store?

Kamikaze: I would highly recommend the Chtorr series by David Gerrold. It's about an ecological invasion of Earth and the various ways that people try to deal with the increasingly desperate situation. There is lots of action intermixed with drama and some philosophical tirades, set against a background of many strange and interesting alien creatures. (: It's one of my favorite sci-fi series.

Sadly, the books are currently out of print, but they're easy enough to find used on Amazon. The first book is A Matter for Men.

Haha, yeah, I know how that goes. Whenever anyone recommends a book to me these days, I have to warn them that I'm doing this challenge, so their books will have to wait until after that. It's a handy excuse; I'm often really bad about following up on recommendations, lol.

I know what you mean! I have the bad habit of forgetting what people recommended by the time I don't have a new book in front of me... but hopefully that won't happen this time!

At the moment I'm quite attached to The Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop.
I don't know what it is about this series, it just draws me in time and time again.

About authors passing away:
I'm going to be inconsolable when Ray Bradbury finally passes on. I have so much respect for that man, it'll be tough to accept that he won't write anymore.
