Sakura_Madison:
I am doing well enough, considering I am unable to sleep.

sarofset:
As much as your culture is similar to all other Western cultures, I suppose.

Farewell, Popcorn Gun.

@ Lise:

I am in the same way as you.

Sometimes, I cannot sleep much in the nighttime.

@ Sarofset: while recognizing that Lise is not a Roma, I would like to point out that the Roma originally came from the lands north of India, so at their roots, they are not western...

sarofset:
You are comparing me to the Romani yet calling my culture Western?

Sakura_Madison:
Sleep is often elusive... It is best to not chase it when it will not come, in my experience.

However, I feel I may be able to sleep now. Goodnight, Menewshans.

Cardinal: their culture may have started near india, but physically they are more akin to Vikings, or Celts. And besides, most of the middle eastern cultures were once referred to as western cultures.

Lise: goodnight.

Actually, I am not sure we can really compare the Roma to any other culture. They are very distinct, and have much regional variation, while maintaining cultural cohesion.

... cultural cohesion, I guess for the ones still around Europe. Most of the ones that moved to america, lost touch with their once treasured families, and forgot about their cultural roots. Same as a lot of other peoples. It's sad really.

It is sad indeed. We have a surprisingly dense Roma population where I live, but many feel they have to hide their cultural identity to avoid prejudice.

They are generally speaking Xenophobic as a people. Same as many first generation Asian families. Also Greeks, Italians, Irish, ... anyone with a different language really. (And yes a lot of Irish people still speak Celtic.) I guess it's an unfamiliar surroundings thing.

Well, I think that most people feel culture shock when they are completely immersed in a new environment, especially when they feel they are going to be surrounded by it for an extended period (which is certainly the case with immigration.)

I studied abroad for a bit but didn't feel any culture shock while I was there. For me the shock was really coming home! You don't think about it be things still happen while you're gone and things change. My friends were different people and things weren't the same with my boyfriend. It was pretty hard getting used to things back in the states again. >.<
