I almost slept more, but it was already 8 and I knew it was a bad idea.

@Linnea: Actually, I'm wondering if setting my alarm for shorter naps than that hasn't been a mistake. It just means hitting the snooze, then turning them off in my sleep and then... not waking up at the right time!

I think that's what they call a power nap. But I thought that 45 minutes was average for hitting REM cycle, which is sorely needed for what's considered "good" sleep. Now, it's VERY bad to interrupt REM sleep. It's a very important part of sleep.

during the weekdays i get about 3.5 to 4 hours of sleep a night... is that bad??
i tend to nap 2-3 hours in the afternoon though

You might have a point-if you don't hit REM, you can't interrupt REM, which is probably ok. There is something called a power nap though, usually short enough to do during a lunch hour.
