Yes, they do everything they can to make things faster.
Each Olympic city wants the highest score to be from their city, so they do all that.

Unfortunately, in the luge it backfired. All they had to do was cover the steel poles, and possibly that poor man would have survived.

It's kinda scary to realize just how hard they're actually pushing it. They're still going in excess of 90 miles per hour by the end of their runs.

And they have nothing protecting them if they do collide with something. It's just frightening...and rather cold, I imagine.

I suspect that their adrenaline is running so much, they probably do not feel the cold.

Yeah. I fugred as much. It just seems quite cold from where I'm sitting. Then again, I'm not used to real cold. I live in an almost subtropical climate.
