Because Henry wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon to marry Anne Boleyn. D= Well, he wound up doing that, so the Pope excommunicated him.

I'm trying to remember which king was excommunicated from the catholic church for filling positions the pope did not want him filling because it gave the king more power than the pope wanted him to have. the king and his family was forced to walk barefoot in snow as penance to be able to take communion again.
