Everyone thought computers wouldn't understand the binary zeros in the year 2000, and everything would crash. Stock market, cashiers, all of it.

Lol, I was so unaware of those happenings. Though I don't think I would've cared much if the computers had crashed, albeit I would now sorely miss the Tea Room if they did at this point in time. I was only ten that year.

All I knew was that the number 2000 was a big deal because there had never been a 2 in front of the year date before, lol. I remember staying up that night and watching the ball drop with my grandmother.

The year in most computer programs was programed using 2 digits (81, 82, etc).
The problem was going to be when it rolled around to 00, 01, then the programs would not work correctly anymore. This was particularly true when you had to figure out how many years something happened.

People would get the wrong amount of interest in banking accounts, etc.

Hmm, so there was something to that one. People just took it out of proportion and called it the end of the world, ey? Interesting.

It would be pretty bad if the full system crashed for a single day though. Maybe even a single hour.

It was quite a big deal, and could have been catastrophic. Dates on drugs, maintenance schedules, all sorts of things could have gone wrong if the computers had not been changed prior to the problem.

yeah but likely since there was hype they were prepapred. which prevented disaster.

How did humanity survive the thousands of years it did without computers, I wonder? The dependency we have on technology these days is bad to an extent, even though it's done so much good.

Yes, we are so very dependent on technology.
It is rather frightening.

i'm scared of our dependency on technology. so scared that i think sometimes some of the stuff in terminator is entirely way too possible

For me it's both a way of working and a form of entertainment.

I think everyone's a little afraid of technology and doesn't want to admit it. There's something wrong with a person that can't spell or remember information because they use Word and the internet to recall it for themselves. It drives me crazy.

I also hate how some have become such hermits because of the internet taking away the need to learn face-to-face social skills. Things like this are what scares me.

how people being freaked out about 2012 is silly sense, it's probably not really going to happen.

yeah stuff like that is definitely scary elysium, but our quest for intelligent machinery is scary as well.... they are trying to created computer systems that can think and react like actual human beings now. not artificial intelligence, like more than that.

I don't know. I've always said that I believe something is going to happen in 2012. There are a good deal of people who say it won't be the end of the world, rather a spiritual awakening of sorts. I like to lean towards that theory if I lean towards any.

To think nothing will happen is foolish. With all the worry people have over it I would bet you a good sum of money that more than a few people commit suicide, and every disaster that year is blamed on it.

EDIT: Definitely, Wings. I want nothing to do with being controlled by "Intelligent" robots. I see no reason for them to exist. They are nothing but scary, disturbing, and threatening. Some things should be left undiscovered as far as I'm concerned.
