I'm pro-Valentine's Day - it was awesome this year now that I happen to be in a good relationship this year. It was a great excuse for me to exercise my creative gifting powers and also I got to receive some beautiful flowers and lots of delicious chocolate. What's not to like about a holiday that involves celebrating love, presents, and chocolate??
But even before I was in a relationship I wasn't a Valentine's-hater. I mean, I participated in the good old singles awareness day parties, but that makes perfect sense. Since Valentine's Day isn't made for single people, I distracted myself from it through parties and friends, which I had plenty of despite my lack of significant other. I never resented anyone for participating in Valentine's Day, though.
At the end of the day you can get rid of any of the stupid traditions you don't like. I'm sure there are some that really are consumerist, sexist, and generally annoying. But hating on the day itself just smacks of jealousy to me, really...
My point is: Don't be jealous, celebrate your singeton status! There are lots of great things about being single: you can modify your appearance (hair cut, hair dye, piercings, tattoos) without having to care about your partner's thoughts, you can plan spontaneous road trips without having to care about your partner's schedules, you are completely free to be with anyone...just enjoy it! And then when you're in a relationship, you can enjoy Valentine's Day. That's what I did. :-)
