The 50 Book Challenge :: Classic Love Stories, Anyone?

http://www.worldoflongmire.com/featu...vels/gimme.jpg

The 50 Book Challenge is a reading experience where you aim to read 50+ books each year. Users come together in our hangout thread to discuss literature, get recommendations, and give support to everyone in the Challenge.

With the Valentine's season coming around, it's time to start talking about great romance literature!
Whether you're a fan of the classics (Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Isolde, Elizabeth and Darcy)
or whether you're an avid reader of corset busters (maybe Fabio will make an appearance?),
this is the hangout for you!

 Feel free to discuss any books that have even a touch of romance.

Romance Novel of the Day

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

Ah, the perils of being second best.

For romances I really have to suggest Amanda Quick's books, I have most of them under this name (I know it's just a pen name, she writes mysteries under her real name) and I have read all the ones I have over three times at least. I am a little biased about these books as they were the first romance books I managed to finish without gagging on the overly lovey dovey-ness of some others I have tried to read. They are also set in England which plays a part in my choice.
Her descriptions are brilliant, you can really imagine the ballrooms and the people (well I can even if others can't) it isn't too description heavy and they are really easy to read for the first time, after that you notice little things that everyone misses on a first read.
Thankfully they aren't just all romance, they all have a mystery and you can track her newer ones by how much the occult and arcane appear in them so while they can seem a little flat they really do have a great amount of content in them.
Ok, thats my spiel over with for now. If anyone else has read these please let me know what you thought of them, I'd really like to meet a fellow Quick fan

I've never heard of Amanda Quick - Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm not much of a fan for romance novels. I tend to prefer the "classics" that include romance as part of the plot. You just can't get any better than Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters.

RisikaFox 02-14-2010 11:48 AM

@Kinli: I've not heard of Amanda Quick, but I may look her up. ^^

@Knerd: I've read Pride and Prejudice, which was awesome. I plan on reading more of Jane Austen's works, are there any in particular you'd recommend I start with?

The Count of Monte Cristo!
One of my all time favorite books, and yes - a love story in its own way!

I have not read Cyrano (yet) nor any Amanda Quick books. Cyrano is on my list... I don't know if Amanda Quick will ever be; it's just not something I'm likely to pick up.

Recently, I've been stuck on Regency/Victorian romances. :P Right now I'm a big fan of Christina Dodd, Celeste Bradley, Sabrina Jeffries and Stephanie Laurens. =3

I think Time Traveler's Wife was a brilliant romance. The movie changed my views of it a little bit, I must admit. Before the movie I didn't nitpick it at all and when the movie came out and people started talking about it... Perhaps a few things could make it better, but overall it was a great book for sure. (Almost) No book is perfect, right? <3

Hmmm... I think my favorite "romantic" novel is.... Pride and Prejudice and Romeo and Juliet. I am a sap for the classics. But I do enjoy Meg Cabot books on many occasions.

I just finished James' The Portrait of a Lady for one of my English classes. In a way, it's about failed romances. Not so much for a quick, happy read, but it's one of my favs!

I would recommend, as one of the most beautiful romance stories I have ever read in my life:

Jostein Gaarder: The Orange girl.

The author is Norwegian, but I think you can find it in English as well. ^_^

Sense and Sensibility is my personal favorite. There's a very interesting contrast between how each of the sisters handles romance, so it really gives you multiple stories in one.

~LONGCAT~ 02-14-2010 03:51 PM

I've really only read a few romance novels, mostly out of boredom or not knowing what I was reading. I'm more of a horror and fantasy kinda gal. *shrugs*

RisikaFox 02-14-2010 03:52 PM

@Knerd: Ah, okay. I'll start there then.

@Longcat: I'm not much of a romance reader either, but a lot of genres incorporate romance into the story, which is what really enjoy. Pure romance doesn't do it for me, most of the time. xD

~LONGCAT~ 02-14-2010 03:54 PM

hahaha I take it back. I do read romance but it's in the guise of fanfics. Lol. guilty pleasure right there. reading fanfic trash. XD

RisikaFox 02-14-2010 03:57 PM

Oooh, naughty Longcat. Overdosing on fanfiction can be detrimental to your mental health, did you know? xD But I do occasionally dabble in it myself once in a while, so I can't really talk.

Knerd 02-14-2010 04:00 PM

Fanfiction can be fun on occasion.

The only fanfiction I ever really got into was the Shoebox Project. It's a Marauder Era Harry Potter fic that mostly follows the relationship between Remus and Sirius. It's pretty sad that it hasn't been updated within the past year. :(

say-i-love-you 02-14-2010 04:01 PM

I'm guilty of reading fanfiction sometimes but its hard to weed out any good ones. I don't like when someone completely changes the way a character acts. It ruins the point of fanfiction in my opinion.

~LONGCAT~ 02-14-2010 04:02 PM

I suppose, but it's quick reading and something to do instead of work. created many an idea for artsies.
I'm mostly in a dethklok fandom, so really dumb stories about really dumb musicians. eh there's some good ones there.

say-i-love-you 02-14-2010 04:05 PM

I'm all for the Harry Potter fanfics. Maybe its just cause I'm in withdrawal from a lack of actual Harry Potter books. So sad that they ended :(

Knerd 02-14-2010 04:26 PM

I used to read some Lord of the Rings fanfics too, but I never got really into that. It was more like a fun way to explore the possible natures of each character.

There are a surprising number of good Tom Bombadil fics out there.

say-i-love-you 02-14-2010 04:28 PM

Never heard of Tom Bombadil, what is it?

Knerd 02-14-2010 04:30 PM

Tom Bombadil is a character from the Lord of the Rings.
He's present in the books but was cut out of Peter Jackson's films.

You can read about him here if you're interested.

say-i-love-you 02-14-2010 04:35 PM

Ah~
I was never into Lord of the Rings. Probably from a lack of the books. I think I would like it but I barely have time to read the book I'm on now let alone a series.

Knerd 02-15-2010 02:49 PM

I've updated the Romance Novel of the Day to Gone with the Wind.
