It was stocking up on some groceries, getting some meats too but not too much worth, and also getting some seasoning mixes and sugar. Also saved around $30 with a 10% off bonus.
We had finally received the Food Stamps card and went to use it for December groceries. This month is pretty close to being over, so we stocked up. Plus the cupboards were pretty bare before the shopping.

I hate empty shelves. :( I come home to empty shelves all the time. My mom has been pretty tight on money.

neller - Yeah, I don't really need much makeup. I usually only do my eyes if I do anything at all. But I don't give myself time.
Dragoness - Oh, yeah, I get food stamps too and it goes pretty fast. But if you bought a month's worth of food, then that makes since.

There is still about $30-40 left on the card. Next month and the following months, we will get $426.

What all does food stamps cover. My mom used to get them when my sister and I were babies and she said she'd buy our diapers with them.

Just food (except for hot deli food, alcohol and energy drinks). At least here. I know you can get cash from them as well, but I just get food stamps.

This might be gross for some people to hear but I got a scrape on the inside of my upper lip and every time I ate something a canker sore popped up and got worse. I just popped it. :(

It's gone now. I guess they're really common - I get them on the roof of my mouth sometimes and I hate that the most because it feels like there's something stuck in my throat. >.<

I looked 'em up to see what causes them but apparently they're just aggravated by spicy food and hot food. So, it makes sense why that one kept growing.

I know you can't get alcohol or cigarettes with 'em. Dunno about anything else.
A good bet is if there's a WIC label near the product somewhere (usually next to the price tag), it's covered by food stamps as well, but I'm not sure as far as non-food products go.
I'm actually kinda sad... I found out that for the past three years, I've been eligible for food stamps, but I never got them. Now that I'm graduated, I'm no longer eligible. Curses! :illgetu:
Trying to get my fiance to apply for them instead now, to help save him money. Though he's pulling the "pride card"... I told him to just think about the 'stamps' as a gift card for food (since they are on debit-type cards now).

Food stamps cover all food and drink items. I don't know about tobacco, alcohol, and energy drinks.

I read a really dumb article about a guy who paid a student to go "undercover" and find out what you could get with food stamps... the list was so dumb. The guy was like "OMG YOU CAN GET JELLO, Y'KNOW, FOR MAKING JELLO SHOTS. WHICH HAVE ALCOHOL IN THEM. STUDENTS SHOULD NOT GET FOOD STAMPS OMGWTFBBQ." I head-desk'd really hard.

Oh, found the Huffpost's coverage of the "investigation."
Investigative Reporter Discovers That Food Stamps Can Be Used To Buy Food
OMG GUYS YOU CAN GET GATORADE FOR HANGOVERS WITH FOOD STAMPS CLEARLY THIS PROGRAM MUST BE ENDED BECAUSE ALCOHOL!
The list does include Red Bull though, so I guess you can get energy drinks (judging by the other items, I think you can get anything with an FDA nutrition label, and any fresh produce, basically). Why you'd waste food stamps on them (unless you're gaming the system, like the reporter did) is beyond me.

The food stamp thing is just making me shake my head.
The other article I didn't find to amusing was, "Food stamps are pretty easy to get" article. They aren't always easy to get in some states. He is obviously taking advantage of the program. Not because of what he is buying, but because of what he is doing. Maybe he isn't taking advantage though. :S Some College and University students really do need food stamps to get buy. While some are fortunate enough to have family to help them.
Edit: I guess in DC it is easy, but in Florida it is all that easy.
I just had to put my two cents in. ;)
Hello to you, Linnea. Happy Winter Festival to you too!

Yeah, I was probably eligible for food stamps all through college... but I wouldn't have needed them my first two years since my school forces you to live on-campus during those years, and when you live on campus you're also required to have a meal plan through the school. So despite eligibility, I didn't need them, and still wouldn't have gotten them.
That student 'investigating' clearly didn't need them; he even said he was a "rich student" in the original article. Lucky him, but my dad's been unemployed for four years and I've been paying my way through college with loans, grants, scholarships, and jobs (though the jobs haven't covered nearly as much as I would have liked...).
Since my fiance is about $6000 short of completing next semester, I'm trying to get him to save money any way he can, so after the New Year I'm walking him to the social services office to make him apply for stamps. I'd apply too, but I'm no longer in school and I don't have a job at the moment, so I'm not eligible anymore. Once I start working again, I'll be provided meals as part of the program, so I still won't get them, even if I were eligible by some stretch of the imagination.
