Ah... Rocket News. Calling their stuff "news" is pretty generous most of the time since they tend to present small snippets of info to support the "wacky Japan" stereotype without giving any cultural context.
As for the content, the video seems to me to be a parody of idol culture in Japan. (The video uses a lot of tropes common in TV programs about idols in Japan.) I don't know enough about it to say for sure, but my guess is that it's mostly tongue-in-cheek. They talked about how wanting to freshen up the image of classical statues that are at their core very beautiful, ideal men. So my guess is they ran with the idea and tried to re-imagine them as idols. Real-life idols are often criticized as being extremely commercial and having their images carefully sculpted, so that works well for a parody.
That said, I wouldn't be surprised if they did end up being popular. The trends lately tend to lean toward absurd or "gross cute". (My husband has a keychain with a gold pile of poop on it and he thinks it's adorable... I bought it for him.
) I guess I'll let you know if I see any classical bust merchandise around town.
PS - A movie/manga series is quite popular right now that features Ancient Rome, so that could also explain the push to make Roman statues into popular goods.
