well, most of the background items are part of the contribution items. So you either have to donate to mene, or buy them in the market. they usually run around 5000 gold. The regular flesh tone skins are under the avatar section, but if you are looking for say blue or green or purple, those are also Contribution items. To earn gold, you just have to post in the forums. lots of people earn gold in the rp section because its easy to make huge posts and frequent posts. if not, then i suggest a more active thread like the RAK thread (random acts of kindness). they also have a tendency there to randomly give ci's away. so you might get lucky there.
