You don't! You must find one! There's one in every location. Hm, and poet is my profession. Well, poet, writer, seems it's one and the same. It was what I was given after escaping prison.
I find being a poet and writer so... befitting. You could probably be anything, really. Anything that might find you interest. Or that might follow your ambition.
Well, over time your status will improve. Just keep working to get your qualities---your watchful, dangerous, shadowy, and so one, leveled up while reading on the storylines that help you connect to society, criminals, and other sects that give you much more access to other parts of the city. And you can quit your job, I believe, from your lodgings. Then go to a different part of the city and see if you're qualified to be something else.
Ah, Rotsygold is useful in buying or trading things, or you can sell them (very useful in sending letters to other players). Foxfire candle stubs, for me, are mostly for selling, though keep some around because you can do interesting things with them.
Getting a better place to live depends on your status in the game, and where you are and can be. You can get access to other areas, other places to live, with keys you can buy or steal or unlock, and changing your occupation depends on whether you have one---if you do, quit it and see if you have the ability to get others, in different areas of the city (usually these options are at the bottom of the page).
