You can't live for someone else. That's twenty different kinds of impossible and, if you try to be his only rock in the river, you will find that you are not a rock at all and end up drowning.

While I completely understand that one's partner helps pull one out of the darkest of places, I hate seeing the fact that they helped forcing someone to stay in a situation that is ruining their chances at happiness. I had a friend a few years back who would try to break up with his girlfriend only to have her try to kill herself, so he'd go back, continue being miserable, continue trying to be her rock. This happened several times before she eventually found someone else years later and broke it off with him, but for the time hey were together he was left feeling alone and helpless, like he had to sacrifice his happiness to keep her afloat because the alternative was unthinkable. Nobody should feel that trapped. He should have held off that first time and gotten her the help she needed during that period.

I suppose, what I'm saying is that him sliding back into depression without you isn't a reason to stay. It can't be your main reason either, there has to be so much more behind it, and quite a few people experience a bit of post-break up depression. If it goes beyond the expected, you try your best to get them help or find someone who is in a position to do so.

Also, this is as much something that he is putting you through as it is something that you're putting him through, perhaps more so, since you've gone out of your way to try and mend things, get him to understand, etc. and he's gone and ignored it all and gotten snippy with you over it. You shouldn't feel like the villain here.

Hee, I'm actually trying to be Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite, at the beginning of the game before she gets emo and chops her hair off. ;D

I found this site explains breaks a lot better than I can. Since I've not initiated one either but it makes sense though the site's name is a bit weird. It comes with lots of links to other things as well.
