Yeah, I thought it was a good a time as any---he proved he cares about someone other than himself, and didn't see himself quite so hideously anymore. Of course it's only the basis---lots of things can happen after the fact and to me, it seems that the initial bitterness one felt and the interest and amazement the other felt having them draw together is the main point of the beginning entirely.
