It's called Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, a parasitic virus that infects insects and drives them to travel upward to where it can kill and mutate, bursting more of these spores out to infect any nearby insect. It can look like this more often than not. I decided to hone it a bit for a more horrifying approach.
