Preface

Why do you have to fight for love?…Or why do your beloveds fight for you? Tranquility always has to be protected, but what if I got wounded doing so? Tears of anguish bleed from my eyes, but will it do any good? To restore serenity; is it any aid to get injured, or even worse, killed in the process?

“What? Who’s Alec?” Confusion swept over me as Adrie repeated his name.
“You don‘t know who he is?!! He‘s the guy with overly pale skin,” This tone, I only knew too well; the tone of disappointment.
“I don‘t have any classes with him. I‘m still guessing I don‘t know.” Still too puzzled to think.
“I‘ll show you who he is tomorrow. He‘s kinda intimidating, but I could be wrong.” I could picture her shrug as she said that.
“Okay, fine. Only during the morning and lunch, I hate it when you drag me out of class for nothing special.” I sighed, knowing there was no way around it.
“Hey! I needed to know which nail polish looked prettier on me.” Adrie defended against my crude response. Only one thought raced through my mind, “She’s such a prep…” Usually preppy girls annoyed me, but beautiful, blonde, Californian Adrie stuck with me through kindergarten and I owed her for that.
“You could put on black nail polish, like I always do. I have to get off the phone. Bye…” I muttered, mostly to myself.
So here’s the story so far. My so called friend, Adrie, couldn’t help but to introduce me to some freakishly pale person at school. What is she trying to do, scare the crap out of me?!
I snapped back into reality only to let sleep claim me. Great, I have some dull nightmare about some guy I don’t even know. Why do I have so many damn issues?

“Today’s going to be partly cloudy, with a hint of rain…” I’ve decided my clock radio has aggravated me for the last time. It was tempting to throw it out my window, but I was still half asleep. After an hour of showering, dressing, makeup, and eating I was ready to drag myself to school. There, Adrie was already waiting to introduce me to Alec.
“Hey, Alec!! Come here, I want you to say hi to Tess.” My best friend couldn’t keep her mouth shut, could she? Abruptly, I felt two cool eyes gaze at me.
“Hey. I’m Tess Faliene, but I’m sure you already know that because of Adrie.” I replied, biting my lip to keep from screaming at Adrie, the sayings were true: blondes were dumb…, I had learned the hard way to not scream at someone in front of a stranger. Adrie returned my death-stare with an innocent smile. Easy for her…
“That’s okay. I’m Alec DeBleu, I just got here two days ago, so I don’t know that many people yet.” I looked at Alec for the first time and saw his strikingly deep eyes were golden. A rush of curiosity struck me.
“Hey, I’d love to show you around today.” I offered happily. His face was a façade of angelic beauty.
“Sure. Just as long as you show me where my homeroom is first. Directions screw with my head so you’ll have to walk me there. If that’s okay with you, though.” I tore my eyes away from his perfect face and talked, but yet I realized I wasn’t crushing on him.
“Anytime. I just have to get my books first.” I smiled as my locker opened in front of me. I walked him to his homeroom which was shockingly my homeroom. The other classes he shared with me were only math and history, but I didn’t’ mind. Introducing me to Alec was probably the best thing Adrie did for me. For a few moments, I felt a brotherly bond between us as we stared at each other out of curiosity. Somehow I knew we were going to be really close.
“What school did you transfer from?” Finally breaking the comfortable silence. I let his enchanting golden eyes bore into mine as he spoke. His voice soft and smooth like velvet.
“Crimson Lake High School. It was pretty cool there.” His reply was a soft whisper. It was like there was something he didn’t want to talk about. That ruined my whole idea of the conversation.
“You okay?” I stared into his eyes once more and this time, they were black as coal. “Whoa!” I thought, suddenly astonished that his eyes change colors. He seemed to know what was going through my head.
“Yeah, my eyes shift colors whenever my mood changes. It’s natural, though, so don’t worry.” His smile was the one of an archangel; beautiful and comforting.
“Dude, your eyes are so cool. I wish my eyes would do that.” I interrupted the dead silence with a touch of wittiness. That seemed to enlighten everything.
The annoying bell rang; warning us to be in class. Wasting time in home room was too easy. Talking to Alec every chance I had got us several glares from our teacher. Yet, neither of us paid attention. Life could be turning out to be better than I expected.
