Now you're the one who lost me, though I do like the second paragraph ... That part I can understand.

Change/tweak the character, or change him to another so we can implement all the plot twist and turns that have suddenly started running rampant in my mind.

ie: your character could know about what's going on and be a willing participant, he could be an inexperienced spy on his first missions (distributing the books after copying them) who uses the inherent qualities of his race, and so on and so forth,

Do it .... Imagine all the more twists and turns we could put in!
