It's been a long time since I've been to the states though, I'm not really sure I remember the culture stuff there anymore.

Oh, yeah, they're both born in Taiwan though the grandparents are from China.

Well, I think it might be cultural difference. My family aren't Christians and according to Wikipedia, only around %3.9 of our population are. Over %35 are Buddhists and %33 are Taoists, so gifting isn't really a big thing here. I think my parents only gave me presents when I was kid because at the time, I was living in the states (second ~ fourth grade...I never got any presents before then either), and after I came back, the 'tradition' somehow continued until I was 17.
