Yeah the profile thumbs do that, weird, isn't it! It's usually because you've got something equiped that's using transparency. but it does it at random with other things too. I suspect that little area has some kind of colour limit imposed, just like the main avatar system used to have.

That was limited to 256 shades in the equiped items when the avatar system was gifs, so if someone managed to top that stuff would turn grey, or that murky brown that bits of your wings have gone, so I suspect this is something similar. I like the random alternative looks it creates. :D
