Luke's eyes widened as he said something about Sherry being his girlfriend. "N-no it's nothing like that..." He stumbled, but realized that the boy had left.
"No, I'm sorry. You know, for ruining your chances with that guy..." |
As she heard him say that it was he who was sorry, Sherry stopped before she left. "You know... Sometimes you really do act like a boyfriend." She said with a small sigh. If only, if only... she thought. And with that last little sentence, Sherry threw her bag over her shoulder and started off down the hall to get to her next class.
There was still plenty of time before the bell rang, but Sherry figured that if she got there now, she could work on some homework and maybe get a nap in. She decided not to talk for the rest of the day-- having said enough already. |
Luke watched her curiously as she left. He wondered what she had meant by that. Maybe she didn't like it. His new goal. To try not to act like a boyfriend to Sherry.
School went by in a daze and not before long, the final bell rang signaling the end of school. She stood up from her art desk and walked out of the building, toward the bus loop.
As she walked, she heard a familiar voice. "Sherry!" She turned around to see Trenton's blond hair rushing through the crowd and coming up towards her. She actually even winced as she thought he was going to ram into her. Yet as he got to her, he slowed down in just enough time to catch his breath and start talking again. "S-Sherry. I was--" He caught more of his breath. "I was just talking to some of my friends and you... The boy from art, is that Luke?" Sherry nodded... Trenton smiled wide. "Great! So he wasn't your boyfriend, but your brother?" He questioned. Sherry nodded a bit slower than before... Trenton looked like he was ready to bounce off the walls. "So... Than... Its okay if I ask you to the dance on Friday?" He grinned. Sherry blinked a few times in surprise. Was she being asked out? She blushed a bit and only frowned. "Trenton..." She sighed. "I..." The only thing on her mind was Luke. "Can I get back to you on that?" She asked. Trenton's smile didn't fade one bit. "Yeah, sure! Just tell me by Friday." He smiled, pulling her close to him again in a hug. "I'll see you tomorrow." He smiled. Sherry nodded and forced on a smile for him. What was she going to do? She shook her head and walked to the bus, getting into her seat and finding that she was there before Luke was. |
Luke grabbed his backpack, and quickly rushed out the door and onto the bus. Right when he was about to sit next to Sherry, he remembered his newest goal. He sighed, before finding his way to a new seat, so he could Sherry some space. He didn't want her to feel uncomfortable around him. Although he was sitting in a new seat to help his sister, he felt really different. No complaining, it's for Sherry... He thought to himself, before sighing and staring out the window.
As Luke stepped onto the bus, Sherry smiled. It was good to see him after a long day. She moved a bit for him to sit, but watched in awe as he turned away from her and sat in a different seat further away from her. Was is something she said? Was it she did? Was it because she lied to him about lunch? She was so confused. She bit her bottom lip and looked out the window, figuring that it was because she was replying on him too much. This was his way of saying 'leave me alone, Sherry.' Tears swelled up in her eyes and she blinked them away, continuing to look out the window. How can he just drop me like this? she asked herself as the bus began driving.
She stared idly out the window until it was their stop. When the bus came to a halt, Sherry stood up and made her way off of the bus. When she got off, she waited for Luke to walk home with. |
When Luke got off, he was surprised to see her waiting for him. He had thought she'd wanted him to leave him alone. "Why'd you wait for me?" He asked her curiously.
Cherry smiled at Luke when he got off the bus and then frowned at his question. "We always walk home together, don't we?" Her frown then deepened. "Unless you don't want to walk home together anymore, too..." She still wondered why he chose now to let her go and didn't give her any fair warning at all.
Luke shook his head, "No, I just thought that you were getting tired of me, you know, always being around, 'acting like a boyfriend'." He explained. He certainly did not want to be a pest towards her, and if not hanging around her is what it took, then he'd do so. He really cared about her, and he didn't want to ruin everything because she was tired of him. Luke sighed. He didn't want to hear her say that this was true. That she wanted him to leave her alone. He just wouldn't be able to do it.
Cherry sighed. "I could slap you so hard, Luke." She said shaking her head. "Since when, in my entire life, have I ever not wanted to be next to you?" She asked, taking a step closer. Her expression then softened and she closed her eyes, pushing a strand of long black hair out of her face and opening her blue eyes. "And I said nothing bad about that little 'boyfriend' skit earlier today. You really know nothing of how I feel, do you?" She asked, sighing and shaking her head. "I'm going home. Feel free to avoid me if you wish." She said, rolling her eyes and walking home.
Luke watched as he left him. He sighed a quick sigh of relief. He was glad that she wasn't tired of him. So yeah, that problem was gone, but now he had a different one, "Wait up Sherry!" he called after her.
As she was called back, Sherry stopped in her place and turned around- waiting to hear him out. She didn't plan on saying everything she had before, but it all just seemed to slip out. Once she started, she didn't really know how to stop. Now, here she was, waiting for him to shew her out on how she shouldn't act like that.
