Red Salmon is my favorite... [drool] I'd have to ask my husband about it's specific japanese name, because I never bothered to learn it. xD
Up here in Kodiak we have a "Coastie Roll" It's got a deep fried shirmp, asparagus, lettuce, panko, avacado er...something else and it's done up in a soy wrap and then rolled in orange and green flying fish roe, with a spicy mayo dipping sauce. OMG SOOOO GOOD!

but honestly I'm happy will straight up salmon.

(and no, not all sushi is cooked, quite a bit of the stuff I like is raw, taken straight off the ice by the chef and put into the roll or onto the rice...)

Maxipuff 04-16-2014 11:31 PM

Melody: That roll sounds amaaaazing!! And my husband is a "coastie" so I guess it would suit us, heehee!
He's even from Alaska. [lol] Sounds made for us. Mmmm. [drool]

Melody 04-16-2014 11:33 PM

Coastie as in Coast Guard? O.o

Maxipuff 04-16-2014 11:35 PM

Yep. [lol] Is there another meaning?

Melody 04-16-2014 11:53 PM

I thought you may have taken it as living by the Coast... just checking. There aren't a whole lot of Coasties to begin with so finding (another!) on a site is kinda rare!

Maxipuff 04-16-2014 11:57 PM

[lol] Oh, I forgot how few there are! Yep.
So are you in the coast guard, or your husband?

Antagonist 04-17-2014 12:30 AM

Hmm...I'm weird in that I only ever eat salmon sashimi and salmon sushi. I'm not really a fan of any of the other kinds of seafood or topping that they use in sashimi or sushi. I mean, I can certainly eat them, but I don't really like them. Salmon is just super tasty and will always be my favorite. [drool]

I hate hate hate hate hate wasabi though. [gonk] I never use that stuff. It completely ruins the taste of the sashimi/sushi for me. Simple soy sauce all the way!

They're usually made with eel on top. I haven't seen one that isn't, anyway. [lol]
It was my favorite roll when I was younger. [yes]

I've never had a dragon roll, maybe I'll have to try it! Anything with eel sounds good to me.

Maxipuff 04-17-2014 05:29 PM

Antagonist: Have you ever had the fresh stuff? It tastes much different from the horseradish paste, in my opinion.
And yes, salmon! Nom nom nom. I stayed in Alaska for two months and they had amazing salmon there. [drool]

Antagonist 04-17-2014 05:33 PM

I don't know if the kind I've had is made from horse radish or not. This is the kind I generally come across:

I love salmon sushie and sashimi. [drool] But only if it's raw. The scorched kind and the cooked kind I don't like much. [lol]

Maxipuff 04-17-2014 05:41 PM

Is that…. is that wasabi or soy sauce? [drool]

What other kinds of sushi have you tried??
I get scared to try new stuff sometimes. [lol]
My husband made me try sea urchin and… blegh. One of my least
favorite foods in the world. @___@

Sear urchin is the most revolting food I've ever had, I agree with your sentiment. It tastes like chewing on a rubber balloon filled with burnt tires.

It's really the only food that I've had from the general Japanese cuisine genre that I've really regretted trying. It isn't that inexpensive either.

Maxipuff 04-18-2014 11:31 PM

My husband loooves it though! I don't know why… [lol]
To each his own, I guess.

I still don't regret trying it, though. At least I know for sure I dislike it instead of letting myself
die from curiosity. In fact, I tried it three different times to make sure… @___@;;;;

Nope, never again.

So....firstly, you're full of shit. I don't know what back woods, cream-cheese-filled, fried, roll this, roll that, sushi you think you know, but you're wrong.

Secondly, suggesting to someone that they try a roll named "crazy eel" or "dragon roll" when they don't live in your vicinity is just as remarkably silly, if not outright ignorant.

Maxipuff 04-19-2014 05:56 PM

Hmmm... But if you're in the United States at least,
dragon rolls are a common roll in sushi places across the country
and usually include the same ingredients
(and if anything's added but similar, it's usually named
____ dragon roll, and it's specified.)
So it's pretty safe to recommend in the U.S.
I can't speak for other countries.

Antagonist 04-20-2014 10:09 AM

Haven't ever been to a Japanese restaurant in the states so I have no idea what sorts of things they have, though I recall being shown a picture of one of those rolls they have and it looked utterly bizarre to me. [sweat]

And the picture I posted was of wasabi.

Here's a picture of what it looks like out of its packet: (and dunked in soy sauce)

No need to get super defensive.
I live in the U.S, and eel rolls are available here, I've just haven't tried it.
Someone I know said it was gross, and I didn't feel like spending eleven dollars just to see if they were wrong.

Also, from what I've read, a Dragon Roll can have either salmon or eel.
I guess it's up to the chef.
Don't argue with the chef.
xD

Even in Japan these days, rolls and adventurous combinations of flavors are pretty common. Where I live, local conveyor-belt places always have "unusual" flavors that can sometimes challenge your idea of what sushi looks/tastes like. I've had: foie gras nigiri-zushi, raw horse meat nigiri-zushi, okonomiyaki inari-zushi, cod milt gunkan-maki, corn & mayonnaise gunkan-maki (very popular), etc.

Heck, check out Kappa-zushi's menu. It's a popular chain that sells "junk food" sushi so they are always making crazy combinations. Here's their pages for their special nigiri-zushi, gunkan-maki, and maki-zushi, including some uramaki-sushi (the style that originated in the US). I don't eat at Kappa-zushi much since I like going to places with fresher and higher-quality fish, but a lot of conveyor-belt sushi places have those kinds of dishes.

jellysundae 04-25-2014 02:39 PM

They have some nutty stuff. :O For me, there's no appeal at all to sushi covered in mayonnaise D: Those Okonomiyaki look very interesting though. [ninja]

[i love the little occutopus sushi guy M i r o: made.
this would make you smile, sorry it ticks you off when people mix that up =3

APBCole 04-25-2014 02:47 PM

I absolutely love sushi. It's so good but I eat it so rarely.

Now you may me want to buy some.

jellysundae 04-25-2014 02:54 PM

It's hideously expensive everywhere, isn't it? I've only ever had a basic frozen box that I bought from Aldi a few times, and they haven't sold that for years so maybe I was the only one who ever bought it. ><

*EDIT* I had to get the link again: But here's the what hummuu is talking about
The octopus is from the Harbor Fishing Game. I just turned him into a Takoyaki Octopus.

I kept thinking I should've made those with him.

I went to a Tai restaurant for my first date with my bf, it was nice. I got the cashew pineapple chicken with rice. The chicken and cashews were inside a hollowed out pineapple shell. Then for his mothers bday, we went to a Japanese Steakhouse (was it Habachi???), they cook your food in front of you and do a little skit (although, it seems all of them repeat the same skit).

I only ate shrimp and steamed rice, though.

lmfao I knowww. [rofl]

Most people just lob a lump of it into their soy sauce and then mix it all up, creating that hideous thing in the picture...

I've heard that the correct way of applying wasabi is separate from the soy sauce, like, you put a small lump of it onto the sushi with your chopsticks before dipping the sushi into the soy sauce without the soy sauce touching the wasabi.

I'm just happy I never bother with wasabi. It tastes awful IMHO and I'll never understand why so many people love it. [sweat]

jellysundae 04-25-2014 05:04 PM

I like the wasabi that I've had. [ninja] But then I love horseradish, and from looking at ingredient lists, wasabi seems to be mainly horseradish and very little actual wasabi. Though someone...(Iro, I think?) said wasabi is a form of horseradish.
