The Egyptians did. Bast/Bastet was the goddess of cats. Cats were so sacred that to remotely harm one was to be punishable by death.

If they did... I don't remember any of their gods having cat heads.

I really think that cats are spies!...planted here by a superior race,...to observe humans during their most intimate ( and possibly, embarrassing) moments, and don't let those "cat naps" fool ya! ....that's when they are reporting to their boss!
Think about it! ....if you were of an alien race and wanted to learn about earthlings, it would be smart to plant "pets" as observers and gatherers of info about how we act when other humans aren't around.....and dogs just don't have the attention span for the job! LMAO!
