Jean Grey from X-men. The Queen of Mary Sues. She's been brought back to life more times then any other character in the Marvel universe. Though with the current story line (All New X-men) it seems they're give her more personality and stuff.

heh... I am not familiar with western comic at all... x.x
I only vaguely watch random X men cartoons... x.x

I don't recall her being revived though.

Oh man, you're right! Jean Gray is a Mary Sue! Not necessarily a good person either. Half villain if I remember correctly.

So was Raven from Teen Titans.

GinKadia 05-19-2013 10:59 PM

She turned evil several times. Some times under the control of various people or the Phoenix. But her Knight in shining armour (Scott Summers) always came to save her. She had guys falling all over her, (Dating Scott but Logan was interested and trying to woe her). She was a powerful mutant who had uncontrollable power. Top of her class. A Doctor, the face of the mutant movement. Sinister would kidnap her to use for experiments.

May I present the Mary Sue.

It cool though. In the current time line, the original X-men are brought to the present by Beast to try and change the world before there's a slather of mutants. Jean learns/ sees Beast's memories of what she becomes and is disgusted with what she sees. Now she's actually taking a leadership role and is trying to make a difference. Girl power all the way.

I like the new Jean. Very less Mary Sueish.

The new version would be pretty cool... I wish now I was more familiar with the x-men story beyond X-men Evolution and the recent movies.

I started reading X-men comics about 3 years ago. There's still a LOT of info/ story stuff I don't know. It's also fun just reading up on certain character's lives online.

maidenroseheart 05-20-2013 03:23 AM

That is pretty cool. Is there a place online to read the comics or do I have to go buy them?

GinKadia 05-20-2013 02:20 PM

Hmmm... I bought a bunch and then started reading comics on my computer via torrent.

maidenroseheart 05-20-2013 09:36 PM

So those are the methods. Hmmm... okay.

The way I see it, it depends on how you define "Mary-Sue". There are two definitions that I see commonly.

The first: The overpowered character who tries so hard to be edgy s/he becomes unrelatable and frankly a bore for most people to read. This one? Considering that bad writing is part of the definition, no, there is definitely no place for a character like this in any story worth reading!

However, the second: The unbalanced character who fails the Mary-Sue Litmus Test? All righty then, let's take a look here. Remember that by this test's scoring guide, 50 or greater is probably beyond help.
Harry Potter scores a solid 88.
Iron Man gets a 58.
Black Widow gets 60.
Batman gets 117.
You see, by this definition, the term is meaningless. No matter how imbalanced a character is, they still have the potential to be written well. As shown here, some of the most beloved characters of all time are well within the "kill it with fire" score range. Yet it's perfectly possible to write terribly a character who is in the "ideal" range, too. Scores on these kinds of tests are only indicators of how difficult it might be to write a character well.

maidenroseheart 06-10-2013 01:04 AM

ah, you have an excellent point Steller, I'm impressed

xuvrette 06-10-2013 10:02 AM

Among all listed, Batman is my favourite. XD
I am Mary Sue lover.

Stellar Delusion 06-10-2013 06:29 PM

Me too, if you're going by the imbalance/"exciting" trait "overload" definition. Do that and write them well - that is how you make a good main character!

maidenroseheart 06-12-2013 02:16 AM

That is just amazing. Writing well really does make any character an enjoyable character to interact with. I hated Q from Star Trek for so long because of his attitude, then I realized that his view of life was his weakness.

Stellar Delusion 06-12-2013 03:06 AM

Q is probably one of my favorite character. You know the actor himself was playing him to have a crush on Captain Picard, as well? I learned that and just...it blew my mind. I always kinda saw it but I thought that was just my personal headcanon.

So, we have this callous god-like being who views life as completely meaningless and just fun to play with, until he runs across a certain bunch of remarkable individuals and their charming human captain...sounds like the setup for a bad fanfic, doesn't it? But damn did they ever write it well.

Wish they could have pulled off that same kind of good-writing-wizardry with Wesley.

maidenroseheart 06-12-2013 04:23 AM

I never saw that coming. Still, adds some depth to the persona. So thank you for sharing :D

I liked Wesley until the time aspect was introduced. Then it went downhill. But still, room for improvement.
