Anne McCaffery

This great writer has authored and co-authored a number of great books.

The Dragons of Pern, and the Tower and The Hive are my favourite series by her.
Who else knows of them or reads them?

This is the place to discuss this great author.

Samona 07-12-2010 10:16 PM

She is very good at writing books that make you visualize the story being told, the Dragons of Pern series being a great example of this.

Bearzy 07-13-2010 12:33 AM

Agreed. I'm reading DragonHarper at the moment.

atkdid 07-13-2010 06:38 PM

I love all her books, but I'm especially fond of her Harper Hall Trilogy (Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums).

Bearzy 07-14-2010 12:59 AM

I haven't read those, but I think they're in my school library, I'll have to check next week when we go back.

HappyStarr 07-17-2010 01:19 AM

Ahhh...we have the Dragonriders of Pern series about somewhere....I read the first one, but could never find the rest. Loved the first one, though. 8D

Bearzy 07-17-2010 03:12 AM

They're really good. There's a graphic novel of DragonFlight.

HappyStarr 07-20-2010 04:56 PM

Holy cow, really??? 0.0 I'll have to look into that, too!

Bearzy 07-21-2010 12:12 AM

Really really, it was the first Pern thing I read.. It's good :)

ZhuHe 07-21-2010 01:09 AM

Is it ok if I join in? I've read most of the Pern books except the ones that are written by bot her and her son. Last year I was reading lie three or four each week and my math teacher who read and liked them commented on it. That was creepy! I did not know about the graphic novel, now I have to read it too.

Bearzy 07-21-2010 02:49 AM

Always fine to join in ZhuHe. Haha, that sounds like my math teacher last year, he would go to take my book off me (I read in maths because I was bored.) Then decide it was a good book and give it back.

HappyStarr 07-21-2010 05:11 PM

hahha! That sounds like an awesome math teacher. I used to read in my Algebra class in 9th grade..I was bored and we'd go over the same material for 2 to 3 classes. So I'd just read and when they thought they were catching me off guard, I'd look at the question on the board, look at my homework, and give them the right answer. Then go back to reading. ...Of course..that was when math was easy...:gonk:

Bearzy 07-21-2010 10:20 PM

Yeah, as soon as I could I stopped taking maths :) I'm happy now.

ZhuHe 07-24-2010 02:25 AM

I still have to take math for the foreseeable future and other classes besides. Back to the Pern Books the earlier book are best I think because the later ones get more technical. My favorite is either Dragonsong or The White Dragon.

Bearzy 07-24-2010 10:36 PM

I haven't read the white dragon... But he's just hatched in the book I read last so I think I'll read that one next

Riley_Dragonseeker 07-25-2010 01:49 PM

The series that I mostly read is the Harper Hall trilogy. I've read all three multiple times...... She writes very well and i love her series.

ZhuHe 08-04-2010 04:09 PM

Has anyone read the books that Anne McCaffery and her son wrote together, I think I've read one but it did not stick in my mind. What do you guys think of them?

Bearzy 08-04-2010 10:15 PM

I have, DragonHarper was written by the two of them.. it was good, the only book of hers that I've read where nobody got laid. :)

tanektoshni 08-31-2010 11:51 PM

^^^ wow I never noticed that! I was so caught up in the story.

Bearzy 09-01-2010 01:11 AM

I know, I only noticed in hindight as well.

Jezriel 09-14-2010 06:17 AM

Of her Pern books, I'd say Nerilka's Story is my favorite. Easiest to put myself into, you know?

But I also love her harder SF books, like the Crystal Singer set, or the Ship Who Sang set (brainships).
One of my favorite genre blenders is Restoree.

I stopped following the Pern series after it stopped being mostly feudal fantasy and started being SF again... I don't know, it just didn't jive with how I wanted to remember things. XD

LadyKnightSkye 09-18-2010 03:34 AM

Yay Anne McCaffery!

Yeah, I enjoyed all of her books, and the Dragonriders of Pern is one of my favorite series of all time. Personally though, I also loved the two Ireta books and the Botany Bay books.

Car'a'Carn 09-18-2010 06:09 AM

If anyone watches spongebob here's a Patric quote "Math is Power!" and I totally agree... :XD Anywho... When I was like 13 I tried to get into the Dragons of Pern but I never did quite get into it. I should try again now that I'm older. I did however read The Freedom series. It's been quite a few years now but I really liked it. *rummages through bookcase* Yep! here it is! I think I'll reread this next month. I havn't read many of her books but what I did read I thought she was a really good author.

ZhuHe 09-19-2010 01:01 AM

I really need to read the other books she's wrote, but I got a whole stack of books I need to read. Oh well, maybe later. I need to finish up the few books that I didn't read too.

GrannyJ 10-13-2010 03:22 AM

I also love Ann's books.
I have a signed copy of one of her dragonflight books.

But I enjoy her Crystal Singer series quite a bit also.
