Derogatory terms which I'm proud of.

Throughout my life I've been called a freak, and a nerd, and a lunatic on many occasions. The thing is that I've always had very little problem with being called these things. People say that they are insulting, but to be honest I'm proud of them. I'm glad I'm a nerd. I'm glad I'm a freak, because normal people are boring. And being a lunatic just makes me fun to hang out with.

I know people were trying to bully, and make fun of me, by calling me these things though, and I'm completely against bullying. However it seems to me that if one doesn't take an insult as an insult, then it's rendered completely mute.

A good example would be the fact that American's sing the song "Yankee Doodle Dandy" It was originally meant to be insulting. British officers sang the song to insult the American colonists, but they just ran with it, and now it's a source of pride, which we teach children in grade schools. Yankee Doodle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nerd stats: Plays D&D. Reads Fantasy and sci-fi compulsively. Is on the internet every day, several times a day. Larps. Knows where "the cake is a lie" comes from. Listens to internet music. Plays tons of video games. Uses science fiction expletives and lingo in general conversation. Understands physics when it's explained. Best friend is a physics major.

Freak stats: Acts like a girl a lot of the time. Loves tattoos and piercings, and weird colored dyed hair. Sings in public. Sings songs by female artists (pink) in public. Christian who has no problem with gay people, and actually supports gay marriage. (I catch flack from both sides for this. lol) Male who hates sports.

Lunatic stats: Bi-polar disorder. OCD. Auditory processing disorder. Abandonment issues. Stress disorder. Giant manic episodes, where I laugh at stuff for hours.

Do you have any generally derogatory labels, which you are just plain proud of?

Fag/lesbo. This used to be shouted to me at school, and I'd just smile and nod or shoot something sassy back at them like "At your service." or "You're looking very Shane today."
Why be offended by being called something I am?

Tilly 02-10-2011 09:28 PM

I've been called a keener, townie and a nerd for most of me life, both as an insult and a compliment. Eh, I don't really care either way, I don't think of myself as particularly scholarly either way, and they only call me townie because I have a town accent. Hah, when I was younger in grade school some kids would call me a mainlander and I was so upset XDD

And as for the like.. the mental issue, why would you be proud of that? I don't know about you, but it disrupts my life and I hate telling people about it so I don't scare them half to death if something happens. I mean, I deal with it, I have to, and I'm not ashamed of it, but I'm definitely not proud of it.

The worst thing I've ever been called was "Kraut" because of my German background. I would usually correct them by saying that I was a German and not a cabbage.

Well no scratch that I have been called a Nazi before but I didn't pay it any mind.

Keyori 02-10-2011 09:37 PM

I've been called a dirty Swede more times than I can count. I have no Swedish heritage. o3o

I've also been told I have a fat ass. I can roll with that, hubby likes it how it is.

Philomel 02-10-2011 09:47 PM

Amazon, cunt, slut, feminazi, and radical are the big ones. I've started to realize that being called these things generally means I'm having a mind and identity of my own and my healthy mentality is offending their delicate sensibilities.

BlackEggIceBird 02-10-2011 10:30 PM

I have been called far worse that I can't even put it on here. And besides I don't speak like that. And what they call is far from being true :) I'm freak'N awesome!

Deviant 02-10-2011 10:33 PM

Bitch. Mostly due to the fact that when I do get into confrontations I know what I'm talking about, I'm good at what I say, and often times people don't have much else to counter back with. (And since when is having confidence in how you look and what you say, 'bitchy?')

I've been called a 'slut' before too, but everyone I talk to unanimously agrees that the only people that have ever said that about me are trailer trash that most men wouldn't touch. "Hey, at least I can get laid!" I've been called 'fat' too, but normally when I say they're butterfaces they get angry bahahaha, at least I can admit I'm not a perfect Barbie doll.

But some things I've never been called are a loser, an idiot, ugly, a mouse, nor doormat. I'm happy about that.

sarofset 02-10-2011 11:00 PM

I've been called an idiot by a girl who was arguing that offshore oil rigs were the kind you get here in Colorado, and out in Kansas and whatnot... I don't think I was the idiot in that particular argument.

My favorite thing to be called was nerd, because frankly nerds control the world. Look who has ALL the money. *evil grin*

The jocks get paid millions, but the nerds can buy and sell them... literally.

Bitch, fag, lesbo, gay, dick and ass hole are the insults I get most common. First off, yes, I am well aware when I am being a bitch and I am okay with being assertive when I need to be. As for the sexuality insults, I don't really consider than an insult since I am gay. I just agree with it and it tends to confuse people. The only time it bothered me is when my ex said "Oh, I forgot, you like rainbows" when she was trying to talk to me about her boyfriend, to put it short. The ass hole/dick thing kind of falls along the same lines as being a bitch, I know when I am being an ass/dick and I'm fine with it.

The worst I've been called to my face is naive but in reality I just choose to feign ignorance when my friends or classmates talk about sex. I really think its too early for freshmen to even think about that subject.

Why do you use my name as an insult?

Murasaki Fujiwara 02-11-2011 12:13 PM

People call me Kraut, Nazi, etc. Not sure why since I'm Danish.
My personal favorites is Herring-choker and 'da Nord' or Nordski. I'm really proud of my Scandinavian ancestry.

I also find 'geek' to be a tremendous compliment. Not so much Otaku because of the negative Japanese connotation, but it's not as bad as being called a weeb or weaboo. :P

I am a paranoid-depressive with asburgers autism who suffers from anxity induced panic attacks.

Also, I'm an atheist. But I don't think we have deragatory term yet.

Haha, it's not an insult, it's a reference from the L Word! It's only an insult to people who are easily offended, particularly by the LGBTQ community. ;P The woman who it refers to is quite good looking.

wasabiisweird 02-12-2011 04:20 PM

Lesbian
I get called that all the time at school
And honestly, it's not that I even don't care,
I kinda actually like being called that since I am ;D

sarofset 02-12-2011 09:00 PM

I love being called a nerd. I find it usually means the person calling me that wished they could just do what they thought was fun without being worried about what people think of them. I've been called a nerd, when I was playing D&D, writing on my novel, Larping, RPing on here (mind you all of this by people not on this site).

I also like it because of the connotation of intelligence. I have a high IQ, and tend to spout off facts at people... I'm a bit of an ass. ...which is another thing I'm kinda proud of, since it's mostly said when people are laughing at something I've said or done.

Disco~ 02-12-2011 09:18 PM

@Sarofset: So...it isn't normal to sing in public? o.O

Anyway, I often get called a freak and get called crazy. I'm extremely proud of that. It makes me more fun to be around than the average person.

sarofset 02-12-2011 09:24 PM

Damn straight! :)

Disco~ 02-12-2011 09:27 PM

You would think that singing Dolly Parton's song '9 to 5' to a seagull and then asked to leave the supermarket car-park would be a sign of shame wouldn't you? Quite clearly, they did not meet me xD

sarofset 02-12-2011 09:29 PM

I sing Irish drinking songs in public, and then people yell at me for getting them stuck in their heads.

Disco~ 02-12-2011 09:35 PM

Gotta love the Irish drinking songs xD I'll usually sing some glam rock from the seventies, or belt out some Stevie Wonder and make people hate me xD

Aspinou 02-12-2011 09:43 PM

Errh. I've been called "dyke" (So what? I call myself that), "bitch", "vainglorious" (at least that's what the wordlist translates it to o.o) and other things I can't translate. Though I've probably been called worse behind my back. Where I come from people don't really say that kinda thing in someones face they just talk about it with others *sigh*...

sarofset 02-12-2011 09:53 PM

Where you from? I'm from the U.S. Specifically Colorado. You're not supposed to call people anything, like ever, because it's not PC, but I have never cared for the sentiment.
