well Retard by definition is typically connected to a disability of some sort, typically added referring if it's mental or physical.

Nowadays though it is treated like a highly insulting word and typically is better to avoid using.

retard literally means slow.

to retard something is to slow something.

fire retardant -- its not fire resistant, it just SLOWS the fire.

I had forgotten about the other use. People in the US freak out if you use it so I couldn't really remember a full definition.

Well in the sense of Fire Retardant, it would in a way mean resistant. As it will burn given proper time. Like the gloves I have are fire and heat resistant

The way people use retard is making word sounds so much more evil...

Well, it used to be a polite way to say that someone was disabled, but now disabled is the 'nice' way of putting it (and saying "retard" is offensive...because not all "retards" are slow...which is probably true, so, yeah i can see how it could be offensive).

Same with the word "Dumb" which was typically used to refer to someone who can't hear or is hard of hearing I do believe.

Retard now means rubbish of society to me.
