Eli's Big Gay Pixels! Currently Pixelling: Bohemian Tee (unisex), Kita Coat

Hello, I'm Elirona! I was briefly a mod here on Menewsha and I wanted to get into pixel art. :) I'll be posting my cool creations here!
I've just started, so please be easy on me. ;_;

And we're good for posting! yay! [cheer]

Maria-Minamino 06-05-2017 12:53 PM

Eli! Glad you made a thread :)

I'm looking at your bohemian tees. I like the shape of it and the stripes are very fun! Have you added any shading in terms of folds yet? :)

Elirona 06-05-2017 01:25 PM

I've not, Maria. How would I do this? :o I'm not incredibly familiar with drawing clothing with folds... <:3c

Elirona 06-05-2017 06:39 PM

Maria-Minamino: Here, I've tried to add some shading. I feel like... it isn't significant enough? Idk.

I made a female version of the Bohemian Tee.

Hm, the only thing I can really tell is that on the female tee the stripes shouldn't be straight on the boob area. Like they should curve to follow the contour of the chest.

There also needs to be more shading since it looks pretty flat. I know the light source is supposed to come from the top left I believe? So you need darker shading on the right side (my right, not the avi's right). Maybe take a look at some of the other tees we have on the site for reference?

Here are some terrible refs but hopefully they will give you an idea of what I'm trying to say about the stripes.

I'm not so great at commenting on pixels. Maybe Cora: or Nephila: can help give some better feedback than me? :?

Elirona 06-06-2017 02:52 PM

Hmm, yeah, I thought that would come up. It'd take some time from me to really figure out how to do it correctly. [gonk]

I also started working on something a bit more difficult. [sweat] I call it the Kita Coat. Shading is hard! [illgetu]

zigbigadorlube: I think I fixed the boobs! How does this look?

@Eli - in my personal experience, I find it easier to shade a shirt first and then add the details.

If you took the stripes out of your shirt (temporarily)...then look at existing mene shirts zoomed in to see how they shade, add the shading, then put the stripes back in (shade the stripes afterwards)...it will really help you solidify the shading. It's hard to have those details and get the shading accurate.

The palettes mene uses have 6 shades. I generally start by using the darkest of the shades for the outline (that will change at the end of the process). Then I use the second lightest color as the base of the shirt. Use the third and fourth lightest colors to do the bulk of your shading. Start with the third - get a nice base down with the shades and wrinkles. Add the fourth to it but leave a little bit of the third showing.

Then use the 5th shade (or second darkest...however you look at it) to add just a BIT more shading in areas that really need it.

I then add the lightest color as a highlight in areas where the light will hit.

And then add the 5th and 4th shades in spots where the light is hitting the outline.

Does this make any sense?

I should do a walk through process and save the progress...wonder if I have that somewhere.

Ah, so, I messed up royally on the bohemian tee, then. [sweat] There's not really any way for me to fix it without completely redoing it.

Maria-Minamino 06-07-2017 03:44 PM

You did NOT mess up royally. It's a fabulous idea so far :) and you don't learn if you don't make mistakes along the way.

These are just my suggestions and personal experiences ...you can take them with a grain of salt :)

I would definitely find a tee mene already has in a store though and mimic the shading it has on it. :) that's what really helped me in the beginning!!

Here, I tried to shade a bit more and see what happened. It doesn't look half bad, I don't think. Do you think it needs more?

Maria-Minamino: Maria, I went back and did what you suggested. I'm not sure how well it came out. [sweat]

I can't really see the best without my computer to give proper critique but I can already see that it is miles better[:O]

Elirona 06-09-2017 11:58 AM

Woohoo! I'll start work on the male version. :P

Here, this is the male version:

Elirona: - It already looks so much better!

Right now, the avatar's left/our right shoulder looks a bit pointy like she has some epic shoulder pads on...same with the male version. Do you think you could round that out a bit?

Elirona 06-09-2017 11:54 PM

Here, Maria. How's these?

Maria-Minamino: Just wanted to remind you of this, in case you forgot. I'm sorry for being a pain. [sweat]

It's always interesting to see how people start a project. You've come a long way with this one and I like your willingness to adjust your stuff. Let's put them all side by side for comparison.

Alright so. The first three were done on your own and the last one is the stripes on an already made T-shirt base. The only problem I have with this method of learning is that your just "stamping".

Before I offer any critique.

Do you see the differences in how the palette has been used in the latest one compared to the others? What do you notice that's different between the items?

@Ziggy: Those long Striped tops are interesting. Kinda temped to try one in the future but they don't fit the current themes. Something to put a pin in for future stuff for sure. :D

Elirona 06-24-2017 12:20 AM

I can see that the stripes add a depth to the shirt that my original designs just didn't have. My use of the palette in the original design didn't take into account the shading, which limited my use of the palette in my latest design. It made me think about what I had to do to make it look "correct."

Maria-Minamino 06-24-2017 12:20 PM

Eli...sorry for late response...been working extra this summer to make extra cash lol

Anyway...the shoulder look better but still a bit pointy on the one you pinged me to. It's just a couple pixels to adjust...wish I could get on my computer so I could circle it for you! Will try to do that later today.
