Event end countdown timer discussion!

Helloo [wave]

Right, I've just added a countdown. I meant to do one yesterday but there are "backstage" problems with this that you guys are unaware of, so I thought I'd tell you. Plus there are issues that we all discovered during the last event!

These widgets create lag and other problems, don't they. I found a pretty one that fitted the Winter Nights theme just right, but it caused a bunch of issues with the event store. So I hunted for a plain one instead. That seemed to be ok, so fingers crossed this one will be as well.

The behind the scenes problem is this...I have some AA help now, yes? It was just me for a long time, and to be frank it was too much for just one person. So after much nagging I finally got Inso to promote Knerd and Iku so they could help me. The problem here is, they might be the same rank as me, but they don't have all the same permissions. The AA rank was created by Kenny for Juru, Yan and myself. When CK joined our ranks we discovered she didn't have all the abilities that we did, same for Chi. Inso owned Mene by then and he went investigating, but couldn't find why. Iku and Knerd have the same kind of problems, it seems Ken expected me, Yan and Juru to be immortal and no more AAs would be needed, ever...

Right now I'm the only one who knows how to open/close events because I have no means to let the girls try it out. We have a test site where they could learn to do it, but hey, it's down and has been for months...It's not hard, but I'm not going to dump it in someone else's lap and expect them to do it solo, when they've never done it before. That would be utterly stupid of me. So for now it's only me who can shut down events, and I'm in an entirely different timezone to most of you. [insane]

Luckily for you lot, my sleep cycle is pretty F'ed up at the moment, so I've set the timer for 4am my time. I apologise to people who wanted way more advance warning, but the timer is something that just didn't get thought about until now, and the problem of who could shut the event down would always have been there. One couldn't really go up until the last day because of that. Shut down is done manually you see, there's no automatic function for that. Not much use having a timer if it runs out and the event keeps going because the necessary person can't get online for whatever reason. [sweat]

I'm not sure if this is going to explain anything to anyone >< But it's here for you! Feel free to ask any questions etc.!

GMT FTW !

Seriously Jelly thank you for all the work you put in opening and closing events.

If anything goes wrong with that timer I'm holding you personally responsible though

sadrain 02-21-2014 04:39 PM

Aw, Jelly. It seems the timer is somewhat okay, someone was having troubles with it (was broken for Mnemosyne), but otherwise seems fine.
And do try to rest, we will manage. :) Nearly 12 hours ahead is a good time to know when it will end, too.

Pistachio_Moustache 02-21-2014 04:41 PM

Jelly needs more help!
D:

xuvrette 02-21-2014 04:41 PM

It surely help let me understand how it works, as I expect everything could be coded. (so much confidence with the site codes. XD)
Thank you for the clock, it helps. It calms me down. Even though it might not be THAT punctual, but it let me know that this was the intend time to close. and save me the trouble to check outside link and do the math myself.

and it is amusing to read your post, by the way.

Thank You again.

ClockReject 02-21-2014 04:41 PM

I'm pretty sure Jelly is completely immortal~

hummy 02-21-2014 04:43 PM

i did realllly like that one, too, darn sparklie addiction!

Rochiel Silverfire 02-21-2014 04:46 PM

Jelly...I just want to make sure you know just how much you rock my socks. Thank you for all your hard work [heart]

Vox 02-21-2014 04:49 PM

Thanks for the info, jelly. :)

To be honest, the timer isn't really necessary as long as there is a predetermined time the event is going to end that we are all made aware of through an announcement. The timer is a nice reminder, but if it's causing lag, it's probably not worth the trouble.

blueblackrose 02-21-2014 04:51 PM

I like having the counter.

KatMagenta 02-21-2014 04:52 PM

This timer and the Chance clock appear to be able to live in harmony, hurrah!

hummy 02-21-2014 04:54 PM

*Kuu-chan* 02-21-2014 04:58 PM

Awww, sorry your sleep cycle is wonky [hug]
The timer is helpful beyond words!

The_Crow 02-21-2014 04:58 PM

That's an insane amount of work. Thank you for taking the time to explain it to us, it helps give us a better idea of what you're going through 'behind the scenes'. We thank you as well. I wish I could help troubleshoot the permission problem. I've done database work, though it's been a little while. I ran a community with message boards, my own database, no ads... all on my own. I remember all the stuff I would have to do by hand because it was my friend's home-brewed code. Good times! Anyways, thank you. I always appreciate it when someone explains things to me... and I get frustrated when people give me quip answers akin to the 'because I said so' that you would give a child. >.>

This has been a fun event.
Next event I hope I'm in more of a position to help with the RAK event.

hummy 02-21-2014 05:02 PM

Neora 02-21-2014 05:17 PM

We had great time thanks to You jelly :)

Queen_Andais 02-21-2014 05:22 PM

I'm horrified at the thought of Jelly not being immortal. Say it isn't so...

Saravi Boo 02-21-2014 05:36 PM

Sounds complicated. I for one never mind when events run long but it is nice to know our deadline. ^_^ The timer doesn't seem to be causing me any problems at the moment and it's not too obtrusive.

Thanks HIM!! [sarcasm]

I'm giving Iku some lessons \o/ Their timezone is only 2 hours different from mine, but having another person able to do things is going to be an enormous help.[boogie]

Then Iku can teach Knerd =3

Saravi Boo 02-21-2014 05:45 PM

Good luck teaching your minions how to do stuff! ^_^ That's always fun.

Car'a'Carn 02-21-2014 05:49 PM

Nope, no questions here! Just thanks so much jelly! You do so much for us! [glomp]

Vickyll3 02-21-2014 06:02 PM
