Festive Folk ~ A Lyric Writing Contest

Jeryck 12-14-2013 03:53 AM

It is at times of celebration the traditional staple of folk songs are brushed off to echo the joyous mood of the community. In the cold winter months, carols can be heard from behind the frosty windows of cozy houses, warming up inhabitants. An element of togetherness is what has sutained both forms throughout the centuries. While many of these songs have come down to us through the years, new ones are still being written in this day and age by people from all walks of life - possibly even you.

Jeryck 12-14-2013 04:05 AM

While not musical myself, over the years I have gotten much enjoyment out of the distinct music I have discovered while living on the island. Inspired by the occasion, I have decided to put out a call for new additions to Menewsha's musical repertoire. I am asking those who oblige to prepare and submit their concoctions by copying and pasting the form in post #6. Those that are most in the spirit of the task will be rewarded with lucre for their efforts.

Categories

Folk: Songs reflecting the Menewshan tradition and atmosphere. It is not required, but drawing on Menewsha's legends and tales may be helpful: http://www.menewsha.com/forum/main/i...-menewsha.html

Carols: Festive songs for the season. Ideally, these will not reference any specific holiday, rather the winter season and the festival that is currently underway on Menewsha.

Hmm, I quite like this idea! I never end up taking part in writing contests, but maybe I should try this time.

PrincessKasumi 12-23-2013 11:55 PM

Hmm I'll try my hand at this (:

hilarbees 12-24-2013 02:50 AM

This looks so interesting! I might try my hand at it... :) I love winter poetry, so I think it will be really fun!

SuperZombiePotatoe 12-24-2013 06:35 AM

pollik17 12-24-2013 08:24 AM

musasgal 12-24-2013 08:33 AM

Question. If we do a carol, does it have to be Religious or not?

Alexstrasza 12-24-2013 10:24 AM

Wow, musasgal you're so colorful, festive and pretty!

Why thank you

hilarbees 12-24-2013 10:54 PM

Do we post the submissions here or do we send them in a PM? I was unsure of that for this particular contest...

Nephila 12-25-2013 10:46 PM

K for the carols one does it basically have to be a spoof on Christmas song?

Here would be appreciated, hillarbees, as it would allow others to peruse it and contrast with their own potential work.

Not at all, in fact original ideas would be delightful. However, if you are particularly taken with the concept of a spoof, it will not be turned away as a submission.

Nephila 12-26-2013 12:27 AM

Hmm. I think I like the idea of doing a spoof. Mostly because then people get a better sense of the flow of your song. Rather than imagining what the song would sound like. It might flow differently in other peoples minds than what you had in your head when writing than on computer screen. :)

Mikio 12-26-2013 12:27 AM

Ooh, this sounds nice. I may join :D I love writing lyrics

Alexander J Luthor 12-27-2013 05:41 AM

I need a get rich quick scheme so I can afford all the things I want on my computer for arts and crafts. =w=

hilarbees 12-28-2013 04:50 AM

Should I post my song with the Bridge and Chorus repeated each time or replace each additional Bridge and Chorus like this:

Verse verse verse
Verse verse verse

Bridge Bridge

Chorus Chorus
Chorus Chorus
Chorus Chorus

Verse verse verse
Verse verse verse

(Repeat Bridge)

(Repeat Chorus)

Do you understand what I mean? Because my song has ended up rather lengthy since I have a bridge to the chorus in there after each verse...

Jeryck 12-28-2013 05:11 AM

You may post your song in any layout you would like, hillarbees. As long as it has the base requirements of three verses and a chorus involved, you have free rein for any other components.

I am looking forward to the submissions. I do hope there are enough to make it a sporting competition!

Oh, Winter Joy~
This season is for all to see
To live, to love eternally
Oh, Winter Snow~
The beauty and the purity
Our dreams will be reality
Oh, Winter Joy~

We wish for one another
To be happy in these times
We want the snow to cover
All the things we'll leave behind

(Bridge)
Our dreams will be reality
We want to better our lives
Our talents rise creativly
We'll be singing, yes we'll chime

(Chorus)
Oh, Winter Joy~
This season is for all to see
To live, to love eternally
Oh, Winter Snow~
The beauty and the purity
Our dreams will be reality
Oh, Winter Joy~

We'll love the fresh new flowers
That Spring will surely bring
In Summer we'll have showers
And warmth so comforting

(Bridge)
Our dreams will be reality
We want to better our lives
Our talents rise creativly
We'll be singing, yes we'll chime

(Chorus)
Oh, Winter Joy~
This season is for all to see
To live, to love eternally
Oh, Winter Snow~
The beauty and the purity
Our dreams will be reality
Oh, Winter Joy~

For now, we have this fresh white snow
That reflects clearly in our eyes
With hope of a future we all will know,
One with beautiful gradient skies

(Bridge)
Our dreams will be reality
We want to better our lives
Our talents rise creativly
We'll be singing, yes we'll chime

(Chorus)
Oh, Winter Joy~
This season is for all to see
To live, to love eternally
Oh, Winter Snow~
The beauty and the purity
Our dreams will be reality
Oh, Winter Joy~
