Half-good now. :3 ((First-time tax filer))

I have like 1 1/2 hours to get this thing filed! DX

"Did you make any federal, state, or local estimated tax payments for 2012?....
....Click Yes if you made any quarterly estimated tax payments for your federal, state, or local return or if you applied an overpayment on your 2011 federal, state, or local return against your 2012 return. Click No if withholding is the only source of tax payments that you have made during 2012."

Google is not helping.

I'm a full-time student completely on FAFSA and New York State state financial aid;
Do I answer Yes or No to this question?

P.S. I'm using TaxACT Online, if that's any help.

P.P.S. Please please please please help me! I don't want to get into any legal trouble! D:

BellyButton 04-16-2013 02:15 AM

You would have had to initiate that yourself (quarterly estimated tax payments) so if it's not ringing any bells for you, it's probably safe to say you didn't. :)

BellyButton 04-16-2013 02:21 AM

Hehe, no problem. Taxes are sure fun, aren't they? ;)

iamnotspam 04-16-2013 02:26 AM

NO, they aren't! They're scary! [gonk]

Speaking of which, BellyButton, I have another tax question. [poke]

Do financial aid refunds count under that category? [shock]

BellyButton 04-16-2013 02:29 AM

No, they're just talking about a tax refund. Like, when you filed your taxes last year, if you got any money back from taxes.

iamnotspam 04-16-2013 02:30 AM

Ohhh, okay then, thanks. :3

Well since I didn't have anything to file last year.... XD

BellyButton 04-16-2013 02:31 AM

Since you didn't file last year (right?) that one is a No, too. :)

iamnotspam 04-16-2013 02:34 AM

Right. :3

Okay, BellyButton, I'm just checking but financial aid isn't covered in this question right?
Since my entire tuition was covered with financial aid?

BellyButton 04-16-2013 02:42 AM

Correct. If you had paid out of pocket for tuition or were paying interest on a loan, you would want to include that stuff. But in those cases your college will send a form showing the amount you paid & you'll have the figures that way.

so.. No again :)

iamnotspam 04-16-2013 02:44 AM

Thanks. :3

Now what about this one?

Would you like to enter your itemized deductions?

Financial aid in there?

BellyButton 04-16-2013 02:47 AM

Nope.

iamnotspam 04-16-2013 02:48 AM

=O

In the review it says my Standard Deduction is $950.

What does that mean?
Do I need to go Back somewhere and fix it?

*calls it okay and moves on*

BellyButton 04-16-2013 02:57 AM

It's the amount they subtract from your total income before determining what is taxable - 950 sounds like the normal deduction for a single person who's someone else's dependant? Did you have any earned income (from a job, I mean, not FA)?

---------- Post added 04-15-2013 at 08:00 PM ----------

Sorry, autoupdate doesn't work for me so I didn't see your question until just now. Lol

---------- Post added 04-15-2013 at 08:04 PM ----------

Did we make it? Did we win?? [eager]

iamnotspam 04-16-2013 03:05 AM

Np at all, BellyButton. ^^
Lol it's not working for me either. x3

Also, no, I don't have a job. Haven't had one other than babysitting and a 1-day job at Arby's in 2011.

By the way, do I have to include financial aid as income?
Because I didn't really see anywhere where it directly asked about receiving financial aid, but....

EDIT: I dunno. I'm still in the questionnaire. D:

EDIT2: BellyButton: 34 minutes left! D=

EDIT 3: Does this mean financial aid?

You don't have to count federal student aid as income, no. What they're really looking for is whether you have "earned income" (ie someone was paying you money for working during the year) so they can make sure they get whatever percent of that they feel they're owed in taxes.

edit: oops - I have no idea about the new york thing, lemme see if I can find out

iamnotspam 04-16-2013 03:15 AM

Okay thanks, BellyButton! :3

Hey do you have Skype? This might be easier/faster that way. xD

BellyButton 04-16-2013 03:18 AM

I'm guessing you're not using those, if you're getting your grants and such under FAFSA. Unless your parents set up one of the New York's 529 college savings accounts for you?

edit: the 529 thing is something someone has to set up specifically to save/deposit money to spend on college tuition, so not part of FAFSA

iamnotspam 04-16-2013 03:19 AM

No, I didn't have a college savings fund, so far as I know. x3

Thanks. :3

P.S. Do you have Skype? It might make this faster/easier? XD

BellyButton: Is financial aid covered under a federal AGI? How do I know if I have a federal AGI?
Would I have a federal AGI if I don't have a job and my full tuition was covered under financial aid?

BellyButton 04-16-2013 03:24 AM

I don't have it installed, sorry [lol]

---------- Post added 04-15-2013 at 08:26 PM ----------

You won't have an AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) unless you have earned income during the year. If you don't have a W2 form to enter, your AGI will just be zero.

iamnotspam 04-16-2013 03:26 AM

Oh lol okies. [lol]

What about AIM? or Yahoo Messenger? I have those too.

P.S. Do I answer yes or no to the following?

If you were married at the end of 2012 and are filing separate, you may claim the exclusion only if you and your spouse lived apart during the entire tax year.
Your federal AGI is less than $25,400.
Would you like to claim this subtraction by completing Form IT-221?

P.P.S. BellyButton: the only thing that might be applicable to me is the AGI thing.?

BellyButton 04-16-2013 03:29 AM

Naw.

I'll just keep refreshing until midnight. :)

No, that's that same thing from earlier.

edit: Most of this stuff would only apply extra deductions to your taxable income, but that is already at zero so there is no need to claim them anyway.

iamnotspam 04-16-2013 03:38 AM

Okies tyvm. :3

Would you like to claim this credit by completing Form IT-257?

*has no comprehension of what that is* XD

My options are Yes or No. xD

BellyButton: OMG IT'S MIDNIGHT AND I'M STILL FILLING THINGS OUT [gonk]

Edit: I don't remember my FAFSA PIN!! [gonk]
Or the answer to the security question!! [gonk]

I think I just remembered it. [shock]
