Pen or Pencil?

When working on pieces (doodles or finished works) do you prefer using a pencil or pen? Or is there a divider between where one is more acceptable to use then the other?

I personally use pen for just about everything I do traditionally. I feel like the permanent marks help me learn from my mistakes and forces me to deal with what is already down on the page instead of manipulating what is only loosely there in pencil. It forces me to think about my space and use, which I think it a healthy exercise towards flexibility with work.

But that is just my experience with pen ^^ Your thoughts and preferences?

I feel the same way about pen, though I most often use pencil. If I have my mind set on drawing, I'll use pencil. If I feel like drawing, but only have a pen available, I'll use that. Overall though, I use pencil. I didn't become comfortable with inking until much later too. [lol]
I'd love to get into more... "permanent" mediums also, like water colors and painting in general.

I like using a pencil to do the preliminary sketch, and then go over my final lines in pen. So I tend to use both. C:

pencil

I use both, but if you like the permanency of pen try scratch-board. it is much less forgiving and a different type of exercise as you have to think of things in negative terms.

Pencil initially and then pen lines when I'm happy with what I've got. I thought most people did this?

Some people have cocksure-ty in their hands, and use permanent medium to put on first stroke.

I am not. I am too nitpicky to adhere to permanent medium. Which is why i love the layers and undo and versatility and editability of digital medium.

Generally, I use pencil. If the sketch is finalised, only then I would use other permanent mediums.

I prefer pen. I don't really use pencils unless it's for a final and I want to make sure my ideas are good, but otherwise, I carry pens with me. I like making dark, hard lines and plus too they don't smear as much as pencils.

And too, I don't have the patience to go over pencil with pen. It's such a hassle.

I only use pencil. It's the only thing that would ever work with how messy my sketches my art and I always smooth out the lines afterwards. I guess I almost always draw everything with the intent that it can be a final piece that I will ink and maybe color later. I used to sketch some with pen when I was in high school and I developed a technique to do some shading with it and vary line width like I do with pencil. I just can't stand not having pencils now though. Must have mechanical pencils on me at all times!!

I almost always pen... I don't know why, guess it's just preference.
But then when I'm working on something I want neat I use pencil first and then pen.

SonicGamer 10-26-2013 05:11 PM

I don't like inking. I always mess up somewhere, so I prefer a mechanical pencil.

I find that when doodling , it is easier and more fluent in pen , but pencil forces you to do actual thinking cause I don't like erasing ( I keep losing my erasers XD )

PrincessKasumi 11-05-2013 01:47 AM

I prefer pencil

AikaCoonCat 11-07-2013 06:00 AM

when I doodle I favor the pen over pencil but when I am drawing for real (commission or self finished work) I like to use pencil first just incase I mess up then go over it in pen.

It depends on what I'm doing honestly.

I use pen when I work on abstract drawings because I'm determined to create the image in one sitting with a flowing thought and it is all too easy to erase and get distracted when that option is open to you with a pencil... I also really like the way that cheaper pens shade. Without trying to being too flouncy (because honestly I don't typically 'get' art or art terminology) I like how raw the gradients can be.

If it's character art I'll use pencil until the lines are ready to be set and even then I might keep some of the lines in pencil because I want them to just be lighter than the ink for visual effect.

xD And then if I'm just doodling... It will be in whatever I have in my hand!
I don't doodle in books, though. It's an absolute crime to draw in a book. [t2h]

PrincessKasumi 11-17-2013 02:57 AM

I doodle on my school notes... lol I can't help it.. I'm bored!

Admiral 12-01-2013 06:39 AM

Since I always used a pen when writing in class (being a lefty makes it so I tend to smudge out my words in pencil till I can't see them) I do a lot of my doodles in pen. When I'm doodling for someone else I'll use a pencil, but I always tend to use pens when I'm just killing time. And sometimes the cutest things will come out of my pen drawings!

LYN 12-03-2013 06:42 AM

I usually just use whatever I'm already using to write notes haha x) If I'm doing calc it's usually pencil and if it's bio or chem it'd be in pen [mrgreen]

BinkaKitty 12-10-2013 08:01 PM

i really like the look of my finished traditional work to be outlined in pen, but i often have a very unsteady hand. its fine for pencil, buy my pen work can be pretty crappy. so ive really gotten into doing a lot of my artwork on the computer. but i still enjoy attempting to do something in pen :)

Uniplex 05-18-2014 10:52 PM

I use a pencil. I'm not comfortable using a pen until I have my sketching done and am comfortable with what I've done.

Pamda 05-30-2014 10:55 AM

I like doodling in pen more than pencil. It just looks very different! [heart]
Though it's a little annoying once you make a mistake.
But if it's not supposed to be a doodle, then I'd rather use a pencil first.
Then again, as of now I'm mostly doing digital works. ^^"

It's gone!

Pens for sketches. Pencil if I'm serious enough to follow up with ink.

zigbigadorlube 06-13-2014 02:50 PM

I'm a pencil person. I draw in pencil and then ink it later.

ButterflyofGrey 06-29-2014 04:39 PM

Pencil.

Reason for this is even if I wanna do a sketch, it turns into a full-detailed drawing, so I always just use a pencil, cause I can't erase pen.

I can't really draw well at all, so I have a chibi style I do, that's being worked on, but I always draw in pencil.
