Dying your Hair

In 20 minutes I'm leaving to get my hair dyed vibrant red, but I'm getting really nervous. I keep imagining the stylist making a mistake, or me picking out the wrong color.

So basically, just talk about hair dying. Have you dyed yours, what colors look good, do-it-yourself horror stories, and anything that may calm me down. Especially that last topic.

I've only rarely had my natural haircolor in the past eleven years. My mother did most of the haircolors - I did "natural" red for awhile before delving into fuschia and purple. I did blue streaks once or twice, green hair for Halloween, blonde highlights one summer, and even a mousy brown I hated and dyed over two days later. The only color I haven't done is pink and I hope to rectify that someday.

Currently I go to a salon for a really gorgeous red color and he does a fantastic job. It stinks to high heaven but it comes out beautifully. As long as your stylist has been trained properly you should come out looking fabulous. ;)

I've always wanted to dye my hair burgandy :]

Rhidia 08-05-2008 07:22 PM

I'm always dying my hair! It seems scary at first, but it's no big deal. I've never gone to a salon, so idk. I always get my friend to do it or I do it myself. It's not really as complicated as it seems! I loved dyed hair, it looks so fabulous.

I've dyed my hair before, I do it at home more often than the salon simply because its cheaper. I've not had any problems with hair dye though. My natural colour is a deep brown... I've had it different tones of red before, and I dyed it black last september.... The black has lasted me the longest, my brown didn't start showing until a few months ago.

My sisters dye their hair all the time, and thus far there has been no major mishaps. You'll be fine. The stylists will take good care of you.

I'm a brunette, but I used to dye a few locks blond when I was
14 or so. And the brown hair I used to dye a bit red, so it had a red glow.
But one day my mom forgot to seperate the blond parts and so it became
fire red. Not very bad, but after a few times washing it turned... pink...
I. Realy. Hate. Pink.

So later I dyed it blond when I was 16, the biggest hairmistake in my life.
After that I dyed it back to brown. Later I always wanted black hair,
but... nah ^^ I'm happy with my haircolor as it is. Something else I would
like though is blue stripes again. But then I have to make a few bits blond again...
And I hate haircoloring D= It itches and I don't have the money anyways!!

Kingdom of Knuffel is for sites other than Gaia now? Cool.

I've never dyed my hair so I can't help you much.
My friend has hundreds of times though and she has never had a problem.
I like red color myself, but I'm happy with me natural color of brown. it's almost black like my eyes.^^
You should be fine My friend has made me sit with her during it many many times.
They tend to go easy on ya. XD
Good luck with the hair.

It grows back don't worry. the only thing I would say to be worried about is how many people will comment on it. When I first went purple little old ladies would pull on it to see if it was real. Before i moved here, there was not a day that went by when someone did not inform me that my hair was purple. Go for it, and let us know what you think after it is done, remember though, at least for mine, it looks better the week after it has been dyed. I need to let all the excess wash out before it looks clean and shiny.

applepie54 08-05-2008 07:34 PM

i have black hair and i tried to dye it brown before but it barely got any lighter so i ended up having to get the almost blond dye to get it brown.

it was nice but i don't think i will ever dye my hair again because it damaged my hair, and i don't mind my black hair.

Railias 08-05-2008 07:36 PM

I used to dye my hair orange yellowish (not anymore). But it takes forever for my hair to dye because I'm asian and my hair is thick black hair. And when the dye is finished my hair is dried to the pulp. So I stopped it and just stayed with my nautral hair color.

I think my sister is the perfect example of why you shouldn't go overboard with treating your hair. It's fine to do but I always joke about her never looking the same each day I see her. She's just done so much to her hair over the years that now it seems to go through cycles where it will fall out. She puts her head through a roller coaster of chemicals and perms so it's no wonder that it eventually gives out and "dies." Still it's funny because after that "molting" period, she'll grow out fresh hair to torture :P I would have personally stopped after the first time because of the fear of that time when it doesn't return.

I would like to dye my hair again but the thought of going to a salon is scary because of my last experience (where the girl totally ignored me when it was burning my scalp off)

I've dyed my hair so much xD
I want to go turquoise next!
I love vibrant red, it's such a lovely colour!

Volucria 08-05-2008 08:04 PM

I've always wanted my hair to be dark red, but my parents won't let me dye it ._. The only hair dye stories I know are those of others. Like a friend who bought a natural red colour, but the dye turned her hair orange as a carrot :XD It only stayed red for a day.

Arisu 08-05-2008 08:15 PM

I usually add red highlights to it.It has almost the same effect. I only dyed it once in red but I didn't liked it as much.

Zoroastra 08-05-2008 08:29 PM

I've had every hair color imaginable and finally I just settled for my natural color. Besides it damages it so much.

NinjaShmex 08-05-2008 08:39 PM

I've never dyed my hair >.> I know a guy that wants to dye his dark, shoulder-length brown hair, with red bits....but he can't make up his mind...he asked me for advice but I have no idea either....>.>

I would love to dye my hair. I'd be concerned about safety. I was told it seeps into your blood and becomes a cancer risk. That would be freak me out enough to stay away and tolerate being a natural brunette.

I would guess that if you didn't dye the roots then its less likely to get into your blood, most likely it wont go through your skin....but my biology always sucked >.>

nagon 08-05-2008 09:09 PM

I've never dye my hair, not a single time, I like the way my hair is, I might dye it when I get grey hair though, but now I enjoy my natural color.

Fullmetal Phantom 08-05-2008 09:29 PM

I've dyed mine MANY times. I'm planning to have it cut and dyed again fairly soon.

At the moment it's black (natural) with blonde at the ends and a few blonde highlights. I'm planning on having the top half/little more than half of it cut really short and the rest left long. It will be cut to be parted on the right, and the right side will be left the colors it is; the left side will have the very front bleached platinum blonde with various shades of blonde streaks farther back...and it will have hot pink and purple in there too.

The first time I dyed it, I had it lightened to a medium brown with blonde highlights. It wasn't quite what I wanted...but I liked it anyway. X3 The second ime I had it bleached completely blonde, and I liked it...but it wasn't really the best color for me personally. The next time I had i done in three layers - medium brown, blonde, and black, in that order...and that was when it somehow turned naturally black (it had been medium-dark brown before); it started growing in really dark.

Most recent job, I did myself...I was amazed to find that it came out fine. My hair doesn't take dye well...and it's even worse about bleaching. I had to leave the bleach in for TWICE as long as I was supposed to. I though my hair was gonna be fried...but it looked really bad half done.

Turned out it was totally fine, though. Not even REMOTELY fried. It was strange. o_O

The only thing i really dislike bout the process is the smell. I DESPISE the smell of ammonia...and that's a really overpowering smell with hair bleach. >.<; And normal dye doesn't really smell too great either...but hey. I find it to be worth it.

RaytheDragon 08-05-2008 09:40 PM

I've never dyed all of my hair one color. But I've dyed sections of it different colors :3

At first, I had bleached blond high lights put in. I had those for about a year.
Then I just had my bangs bleached blond. I had my hair like that for about...4 years. <3
After that, I dyed my bangs hot pink. After that faded, I dyed them purple. & That's what color they are now :D

Mekoness 08-05-2008 09:50 PM

My first experience was a bad one. ^^; In highschool I had blonde streak/highlights put in but my hair was so delicate that it took years to recover from the bleaching. So all the way up until this year I never even considered dying my hair again.

But this time I bleached the bottom layer and it turned out well, bleaching has come a long way in the past few years lol. I don't think I would ever dye my whole head though, I still have some of my natural highlights and I don't want to tempt them to go away.

rainbow_bunny 08-05-2008 09:54 PM

good luck! I have honestly never died my hair. But when you get in done professionally it always works out perfect, plus they have to fix it again if you don't like it so you'll be fine =)
