With their population now cut down to an overwhelming sixth left, and technology out of their grasp, are forced to return their instincts if they want to survive the never ending cold. With fear gripping Man, predators have taken their place at the top of the pecking order. (Suggestions to add to the story are much appreciated.) Struggling to survive, she searches not only for a new pack, but for companionship and game. Despite her status, she is strongly protective over anyone she gets close to. And in her months of travel, she's found herself growing wise and proud. Username: Madoka Character Name: Ame Age: 9 years old Foe or Ally: Ally Species: White Tiger Appearance: Ame She is a large cat, even for her species. She has a scar on the side of her face, but she does not remember where it came from. Bio: Ame roams the tundras of the North, preferring to stick to the sparse woodlands in search for shelter and prey. Though she is a solitary creature, and prefers the company of her own thoughts, she has grown lonely in these frozen and barren times and seeks any companionship she could find. Those she had come in contact with in the recent past had either turned against her in their inability to survive in this cold new world, or perished in the attempt. She is wise and a sad spirit, and has not met another tiger like herself in a long time. |
As the cold sun shown through the pins, Aelin wiggled herself out of the small badger hole beside a frozen stream. After shaking the snow from her white fur, she stretched her back legs one at a time. The air this morning was warm as the snow sparkled in the sunlight. Her fur was starting to thicken along with stored fat through out her body. Summer was coming to an end, and game would be short again this year. Men had started getting brave and venturing further from their huts, driving the good meat from their grounds. Aelin twitched her ears forward, listening to the sounds of the forest. A couple of sniffs told her that a stray dog had pasted in the night as well as a couple of squirrels crossing the ice not too long ago. She relaxed a little as she started out, her body in need of nourishment. |
Ame yawned and gazed around from her resting place high in a tree. She twitched her tail contentedly. The air smelled cold and damp. She was partially glad that the summer season was ending, she did not like the heat in this region of the world, she wasn't used to it. Then again, food was already hard to find without the extra stress of the winter. She wasn't too worried about it though, it had been days since she'd eaten anything and she felt fine, if not a bit grumpy. She felt sorry for any rabbit or bird that would be unlucky enough to catch her attention this day. She jumped out of the tree and sniffed the air some more, checking all directions for signs and signals. There was no other sign of life around her this morning. She snuffled and grumbled, wandering slowly toward the outskirts of the wood in search for a stream. Perhaps there she could pick up the scent of a stray rabbit or any animal. She had been in this wood for two nights already and had only glimpsed a stray dog and a carrion bird. She wasn't liking the thought of having to travel to a more suitable area as the seasons were changing. |
Ruki lifted his head from his hole in the roots of a large oak tree. It was morning again, and all was safe for a tiny chipmunk who was a little too concerned about owls. He stretched, sniffing the air with his minute nose, rubbing his belly with his paws. It was bath time now, so he settled in a patch of dappled sunlight and began cleaning himself.

One day I wake all alone in my house I thought my parents were gone doing stuff but I was wrong. I found a note in blood saying "If you want your family back you'll have to pay the price, come to Nerlend, 258 Main street". At first I thought it was a joke but then it came....

Aelin trotted through the thin snow, nose low to the ground as she sniffs for little mice hiding underneath. While searching for food, her mind started to drift back to the faces of her lost family. Her older brother, black as night with a strong face. Her mother, gray as a wolf with gentle eyes. The old nurse, with her hair raising stories. Aelin winced as she remembered the sight of her friend crumple from her arthritis in the blazing fire. A sudden jerk to her right sent her jaws snapping out of instinct. The faint image of a tail wiggling down back into the snow, sent Aelin pouncing after it, head first. After a few mouthfuls of snow, she finally caught a small rodent by the back leg. With a yip of excitement, she tossed it in play. |
Ame spent the morning walking the tree line between the woodland and the plains. She'd caught a few mice to eat, but nothing fancy. Her footprints, she noticed, were much larger than the others in the snow and mud. She hoped this wasn't the reason for the lack of life in the area since she arrived, but she herself would not stick around if a large and new creature left prints in her forest, especially in times such as these. She followed the stream into the forest, walking on the rocks and moss instead of the mud and snow. She shook her fur happily, the nip in the air and the smell of the snow reminded her of home. She stopped at a rocky outcrop, sitting nose to the breeze, listening closely, and watched for any sign of life in the woods below and around her. |
Her hunt hadn't been very successful; with only two small mice in her belly, she took her time going back towards the badger hole she had taken shelter in the night before. The stream was frozen solid in most places but Aelin had found thinner patches of ice down stream, and she was thirsty despite the mouthfuls of snow. With that as her next destination, she noticed how quiet this part of the world wasn't as lively as the neighboring territories. Aelin as well as almost every other animal, knew that a part of each species didn't have the thought capacity to harbor anything other than pure instincts. But it was very strange to not encounter anyone; this place was mysterious in it's solitude. Aelin liked quiet but after months of no interaction she almost missed it. As her paw was stepping down, the ground seemed to have dis- appeared. But as her paw hit snow, she looked down in confusion. Her eyes widened as a large print was visible, tracks clearly heading towards the stream. More curious than frightened, she ran on the opposite side of the stream, keeping the tracks in sight as she began to wonder about where this animal was and how she hadn't seen evidence of it before now. |
Ame descended from the outcropping, keeping watchful. A small fox was running about down along the stream where she'd just walked and despite her happiness at seeing another creature around, she wanted to stay cautious. Luckily, she blended in well among the scattered snow and rocks, but she did not want to stay too hidden in case the small fox thought it was being hunted. She stayed along the trees near the stream in the underbrush and watched the small white fox intently as it trotted along the stream. She yawned hugely and shook her head as some snow from the tree above her came loose and lightly fell upon her. |
Aelin's heart sunk as she saw the tracks end. She really wanted to know who it was even knowing it was 10 times her size. Hopping down to the frozen stream carefully, Aelin sniffed at the breeze. A faint whiff of tiger was present around an overhang; her eyes started scanning the banks quickly and throughly. Her attention was drawn as she heard a thump of snow from a tree hit the ground. Her body went stiff as she saw a elder white tiger, watching her from the trees. Cautiously, she took a few steps forward to get a better look as her hair stood on end in case this was a tiger in need of a meal, keeping a safe distance. |
The little fox approached Ame slowly and cautiously. Ame watched, slightly amused and curious about how far the small creature would come. She tried to stay motionless and focused on the fox to show it that she wasn't going to eat it. She made soft snuffling sounds at the fox as it got closer and tilted her head to the side, watching. She didn't want to scare the fox away with a sudden movement or sound, so she waited. She was quite good at waiting. She was, after all, in the domain of the fox, and so she figured she should let the small and brave creature decide what to do. |
Aelin was very curious now; the last tiger she met ran her out of a log once, almost caught her too. It was a good thing there happened to be a lot of bushes and most with thorns. But seeing as this one didn't seemed into chasing her away, she let her body relax a little. Still being careful, the little fox jumped up onto the bank, some feet away. Sitting down, her tail swayed behind her. "Good morning," she yipped in greeting. |
Ame gazed over at the fox and twitched her tail. Interesting. This one seemed friendly. "Good morning." Ame purred lightly in response. "How is the hunting this morn?" |
Aelin tilted her head a little, hearing a faint accent in the Elder Tiger. At the question, she seemed to frown. "Not going very well. It seems everyone in this area likes to hide." Blinking twice, she couldn't help but ask, her head tilting further. "Where did you come from?" |
Ame nodded. "There were more small animals around here before I overstayed my welcome it seems, though there weren't very many here when I got here, and there have been a few dogs of humans around these parts. I hope I didn't scare away your prey, I was hoping to have found a new direction by now." She sighed and her ears twitched. She knew better than to stay in a foreign area too long, but she liked this forest. She blinked at the question the fox asked, it was a strange one she had not been asked before by others who were brave enough to talk to her. "I come from the far East." she replied simply. |
Aelin nodded as the tiger talked, ears shifting her head. "Mhm, there was a dog around last night. A stray I think." Leaning down and licking her paw, she continued. "Overstayed? How long have you took shelter in this territory?" The little arctic fox was very intrigued at the politeness the tiger was showing her. "Oh no, not at all. I'm new to these parts. Just came in last night, as a matter-of-fact." Her tail stopped swaying at the mention of the East; she lived in the northeast with her family before the fires. Slowly, Aelin started speaking again. "What drove you away..?" |
Ame counted the days, tail twitching. "I think I first arrived here three nights ago. I usually only stay in one place for a day at most, the animals in this region aren't used to something like me, I don't like to scare them away from their homes." she said. She thought about what the fox had said about only arriving here the night before. That must have been why she didn't see the fox around the last few days or see its tracks. She nodded to herself with a humming sound. Ame tilted her head sideways, observing the fox curiously. Another interesting question. "What drove me away from my homeland you ask?" she replied slowly. "Hrumm...well my typical prey migrated for the Spring season, and I didn't follow them like I usually did, I stayed in the mountains. I don't know why I did that, but the plains areas and small woodlands down the mountains where they all went either were burnt or had become uninhabitable by drought. The animals didn't survive to come back up the mountain, so a month ago I starting traveling West in hopes of finding someplace not affected by whatever strange event occurred. You see, I stay in the high forests and I don't hear much of the happenings in other places." She paused, thinking her words were confusing and jumbled, but she could think of no other way to explain. "What brought you to this place then?" she asked the small fox. |
With her ears pointed towards the tiger, she listened intensely on her story, nodding in understanding. Men had already scared off enough animals; and Aelin was happy to find that the other animals were tending to keep the population from dwindling to hazardous numbers. Aelin's ears dropped against her head at the following story, feeling sympathy for the older creature. And at the question, the little fox slowly laid down, her eyes shifting in thought, wanting to get it right. "My family and I were in a fire south of the mountains you speak of. I'm lucky to have made it out alive. My... the nurse, she threw me to a log by the river. The next thing I knew, I was floating down away from the valley I grew up in." she growled softly, saddened at the memory. "Men, they had started it just before the Earth froze over some 3 months ago. I've been alone and searching ever sense." Aelin didn't expect to find her blood family. She knew they were on the other side; but she wanted to find some of her own kind, if only to find some familiarity. |
"I am sorry to hear your tale." Ame replied sadly. "It seems I too should have suffered like the other, if I had not hidden myself away up in the mountain perhaps I would understand better. I don't know if there are any of my kind left. We don't exactly keep in contact with each other, but I'm sure I would have seen or smelled another if any were around if it has, indeed, been three months since all of this began." The news of how long ago the fire had been gave Ame a hopeless feeling, she had only come down from the mountains less than a month ago and thought all this had been much more recent. At this rate it was unlikely she'd see any others of her kind, and it certainly explained the scarcity of other wildlife. She wasn't too sure what to do now since her journey seemed mostly in vain at this point. "Perhaps some of your kind are still around?" Ame asked the young fox. "Unlike myself, your kind is much more widespread across the North are they not? Perhaps there is some hope for you. Were do your travels next take you?" She hoped she wasn't being rude asking, but getting a sense of another's plans could help her decide where she could go. With all this snow, she would be fine no matter where she went in this region, but she didn't want to stay here in this empty place anymore. |
Aelin shook her head at the elder mammal. "Be thankful you weren't there. The smell of it stays with you for days." Her nose wrinkled, remembering the foulness of it all. But she pushed the past aside as the other asked her questions. "I'm no sure, really. I haven't seen a single one on my trip West, nor any mentioning of them. We travel south for the summer, better game down here than up there, you see. Our ancestors built winter dens up there to shelter us during snow storms." Blinks and looks at the tiger, digging into her memory. "I vaguely remember one my mother told me about. She said the entrances are very small, but can hold many a fox. Possibly about 4 of your comfortably." She went on explaining how they were actually mini caves on cliff sides mostly. And because of most of them dipping under the ground level, they stay fairly warm. "I might head back up north soon. Summer is ending late and that means a short autumn in these parts. Best to find something, right? Most of the storms, even in summer, are pretty brutal." Aelin's tail was swaying again, her nicked ear facing the tiger while the other twitches towards the forest. "Forgive my rudeness, here I am blabbing away and you don't even know my name. Please, call me Aelin." She dipped her head in formal greeting. |
Ame listened attentively, eyes closed in the sunlight. "It's good to know such information, I would have stayed down here, I didn't know of the storms." she sighed. "North may be a good idea, perhaps find some mountains and other's with the same idea?" she asked herself. She nodded at the fox Aelin. "And I am Ame. It is nice to meet you young Aelin." She said with a purr. |
Aelin nodded at Ame's question to herself. "You're welcome to join me, if you'd like to. With two of us, there's a better chance at finding bigger food. And with the trip would be more bearable with some company." She frowned for a moment, thinking. "With the population down, there shouldn't be too many others trying to get into the caves. Although, even if this is true, larger mammals will be looking for shelter as well." Her ears perk towards her tiger friend. "Maybe we'll find more of your kind!" Her voice was full of hope, her tail almost wagging gave her a feel of a positive aura. |
Ame considered this. They would be going in the same direction anyway, and it would be nice to have company after so long without. "I will certainly join you." She finally replied, tail and ears twitching happily. "Though I don't think we'll find any more of my kind...perhaps yours will have gone to those caves!" |
The fox jumped up in joy, spinning in a circle once. "This is grand! I haven't had a companion before." Trotting over towards the tiger, the fox carefully sniffed near her new friends nose, trying to memorize her scent. This close up Aelin noticed a scar on the side of the tigers face, but decided to not ask. Scars like that normally hold tragic stories behind it. Her own wasn't tragedy but foolishness, and she wasn't ready to speak of it. With a squeak, she turned her mind back to the subject at hand: A new friend! |
Ame blinked at the Aelin's energy. She chuffed at the fox when it sniffed her, sending a breeze over Aelin's fur. She got up and stretched her front legs, feeling content. The afternoon sun shone, but did not warm much. |
