Tim Burton.

I've always love Tim Burton's movies.
Even when I was little, The Black Cauldron and Fox and the Hound were some of my favorite movies.

I didn't exactly like Beetlejuice last time I saw it, but it kinda scared me because I was like five.
I think I'll like it next time I see it [which I plan to watch it tomorrow, or sometime soon]

Sweeney Todd is one of my favorites of his, I'd say.

Do you know of any /bad/ Burton films?
What's your favorite movie by him?
Who is your favorite director, if not him?

Moiraine 08-10-2008 08:36 PM

I've always loved them as well. He's one of my favorite directors and one of the most imaginative, original people in Hollywood.

I watched Beetlejuice on tv the other day! I love that movie, it's just..creepy and funny.

My favorite Burton film is probably Big Fish. It's a beautiful movie..

Eh, bad..hmm. I'd say the only Burton movies I'm not really fond of are Planet of the Apes and Batman Forever. They're just not his usual style and lack something..

Tano-san 08-10-2008 11:51 PM

I've also always loved Tim Burton and his films. The first movie I saw from him many years ago was The Nightmare Before Christmas, which is actually my favorite movie of all time to this day. I've also seen Beetle Juice, Corpse Bride, Big Fish, Sweeney Todd, and Batman. All of those were great films. Yesterday I found out that Tim Burton was coming out with his version of Alice in Wonderland. I am so excited for it! The story of Alice in Wonderland was always a bit trippy, if you know what I mean, so I can't even begin to imagine what the great mind of Tim Burton will turn it into.

Frankenweenie! Best dog movie ever! I love Burton. And I think he's kinda cute.

Otherwise Burton is ma herooo. n33n
Sweeney is definately my favourite movie of all times.

I have nothing personal against Tim Burton, but from a creative point of view, I've always thought of him as overly dependent on others, very inflexible and somewhat of a hack.

Disclaimer: These remarks target the films that Burton has played a key role in. While he's been on the animation staff and whatnot of many, many films, the following statements refer to the films in which Burton was actively heading in some way, form, or fashion.

Overly dependent: Burton's writing/direction/production have very little to do with what causes a film to be recognized as something "CLEARLY Burton." Danny Elfman's music is one of the biggest key factors to a Burton film. His compositions are easily recognizable and if you hear them during a movie, you can almost rest assured that Tim Burton had something to do with it. If it weren't for Elfman, it would be hard to really tell a "Burton" film from that of just some random writer/director/producer's work.

Inflexible: There are only so many "gothic" films you can make before it gets old. The world is this man's oyster and he's just picking at the edges of it. He's shown time and time again that he's almost virtually incapable of stepping away from his safe zone. He doesn't take chances that he can afford to take with his writing/directing/producing and it really takes away the luster from his name.

A hack: Most of the films that Burton played a large role in have been stories that previously existed. Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas were original works, but just about everything else came from pre-existing stories. Burton seems to have this annoying habit of taking a perfectly good story, "gothing" up the character backgrounds/designs, and slapping his name on it for praise and glory. The biggest example of this (and the one that annoys me the most) revolves around the recent Sweeney Todd remake. People have poured praise out for the writing and direction and fans have flocked to that man's side once again, claiming the work "genius."

However, through this parade of Burton-love, people neglected to notice that Tim Burton's version was EXACTLY like the play adaptation. The only thing that separated Tim Burton's version from the Angela Lansbury/Len Cariou (or George Hearn) play was the fact that he cast Johnny Depp and, his (Burton's) lover/partner, Helena Carter as the lead roles, despite the fact that neither were vocally trained for their respective roles. In the end, the result was nice, but it was nothing more than a modern-day version of the play.

I do apologize for ranting about the fellow, but... I can't help it. It irks me that he gets so much love and praise, yet his actually originality and talent is very, well, lacking.

corpse bride!~ xD

xSad_Eyesx 09-08-2008 05:55 AM

I absolutely love The Nightmare Before Christmas ^_^ I just can't get enough of that movie, I also liked the corpse bride, and of course Beetle Juice. These are on my top ten movies.

Kratos 09-09-2008 12:37 AM

I've seen a lot of Tim Burton films and I've loved all of them. The Batman movies were good, Corpse Bride, Sweeny Todd, The Nightmare Before Christmas... just a few I really love. He did a very good job with them. I don't remember Beetlejuice though...

Danny Elfman's music was awesome too but... this is about Tim Burton. LOL

Violet_Beauregarde91 09-10-2008 01:34 PM

I didn't know Fox and the Hound was a Tim Burton movie! My favorite Tim Burton movies are Nightmare Before Christmas, the Batman movies and James and the Giant Peach.

If you're going by directing, Fox and The Hound is not a Tim Burton movie. But he was a member of the team that worked on it. He just didn't produce, or direct. He was hired as an apprentice animator and his job was drawing for The Fox and The Hound.

Hmmm well i love all of Mr Burtons works. Especially all the movies that Johnny Depp has been in. They make an awesome pair and the movies together have been brilliant! I would have to say that Corpes Bride and Edward Scissor hands are my favorites as well as his newer creation Sweeny Tod. Though.. I cant give him all the credit for recreating a musical that has been around for years (My grandmother says its been around when she was a child... so it would be over 60 years old!). His recreation of it 'was' brilliant though. I also liked Sleepy Hollow.

Monstryk 09-11-2008 03:56 AM

I'm excited to see what he does with Alice in Wonderland.

tinyheart83 09-11-2008 03:58 AM

Hes doing a remake of Alice In wonderland? Sweet! I cant wait to see that either! Where did you find out hes doing the remake though?

Monstryk 09-11-2008 02:45 PM

Well, if you Google Alice in Wonderland 2010 it'll show up.

I found out at this movie website, I don't remember which.

Maeru 09-16-2008 09:16 PM

I am personally a fan of The Nightmare Before Christmas, its so awesome and nostalgic ^_^ I love sweeney todd though, i mean come on, a film directed by Tim Burton staring Johny Depp? Of course it will be awesome! I really like the soundtrack for it too, its pretty funny. I was surprised by Depp's vocals, they were really good, i wasnt quite sure how all that would pan out. epic win.

car-crash-hearts 09-20-2008 04:16 PM

I Havent Really Seen Many Of Burtons Movies. I've Only Seen The Ones He's Done With Johnny Depp.

Oh And I Saw Beetlejuice. I Havent Hated Anything He's Done Because I Love The Style Of Movies He Does. Just Because Theyre Different To Other Directors.

I've Also Seen Nightmare Before Christmas. Tim Burtons Musicals Have Made Me Become A Fan Of Musicals In General Now.

Steam-Sports 09-26-2008 10:15 PM

Anything post- Johnny Depp, really, though that's probably a very overstated opinion.
I can't really help it, that duo is simply amazing.
I'm definitely looking forward to Alice in Wonderland, in which Mr. Depp is supposedly playing the Mad Hatter.
Which will no doubt be simply intoxicating.
My favorite non-Burton movie has got to be either The Phantom of the Opera (Joel Schumacher) or Labyrinth (Jim Henson).

zero_stance 09-27-2008 01:29 AM

I used to really love Tim Burton, but now that I've gotten older, he just does the same dark and edgy stuff over and over. Not to mention using the same to actors. His films aren't bad persay, just predictable.

shadowfoot 09-27-2008 01:59 AM

Everyone always forgets that he did Mars Attacks! (which you either hate or love)
I love the fact that Vincent Price is his idol.
I also would love to see his Japanese themed version of Hansel and Gretal, which is a Disney movie. However it was only shown once on the Disney channel and hasn't been seen again.
Apparently, Tim is also doing a stop-motion version of Frankenweenie for Disney.

And Depp is also busy in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean, and playing Tonto in The Lone Ranger, so hopefully he doesn't look worn out in Alice in Wonderland...

No, I don't think so, he is so great... I didn't much care for the Batman movie when it came out, but after watching it again I loved it...
Quote:

What's your favorite movie by him?
It's so hard to pick, but I absolutely LOVE the short film "Vincent" that he did...
Quote:

He is my favorite for sure...

shadowfoot 10-02-2008 04:17 AM

@ShuggaMagnolia: I would love to see that short film, but I haven't been able to find a copy of it to watch.

ShuggaMagnolia 10-02-2008 04:21 AM

You can watch it on youtube... it's around six minutes long...

Aerin of the Bow 10-02-2008 05:04 AM

Sweeney Todd and Big Fish are probably my favorites, and I'm thinking Alice in Wonderland is going to be joining the ranks. I am -so- excited about that movie. Johnny Depp will be the Mad Hatter. <3
