Ese - Depends on what your definition of harsh is.
Downright mean? No. I haven't seen a judge at any time who wasn't constructive and polite. But they are picky in that there needs to be balance, matching, flow, fit the theme, etc. Definitely not the harshest rates out there. But it's not "Oh! You tried, so 8/10!" |
I don't think anyone joins this who just wants to be told their avie is pretty. I know every negative comment I got on my last avatar I thought, "Ayup. That's true." But it's not like the judges are saying, "That's horrible! You have no place in this competition! Get out now!"

Right. I was comparing it to rates more commonly seen in like, "rate the avatar above you" and other rate threads where people just try to be nice sometimes rather than give legitimate feedback.
That's not to say that no one in RTAAY gives legitimate feedback, of course. But if someone was more used to that (where a black/white/red avatar could get "Oh its so coool!!! 9/10!" depending on who posted), PM would seem harsh. |

ugh, I hate people who rate like that in rate the avatar above you, I go there for serious rates, constructive criticism and suggestions, so when people say "looks pretty! 8/10", it pisses me off

That's why I just avoid that thread. If I want any kind of ratings, I'll just come here for them.
