Hello, hordes of invisible people!

I'll start off...
I'm Aislin, and I started this thread because I'm very friendly but also top-secretly shy. I like the idea of a hangout, but I'm too awkward to say, "Hello!," and just go join one.

Then I thought, "Hey, maybe there are more like me!"

So, yes, this is an all-invited, feel-free-to-express-all-of-your-inner-dork thread. If you're painfully shy, no need to worry!

Me, I am: of voting age for my very first presidential election ever! Friendly, a lover of books... interested in music, particularly of the laid-back kind... and a friend of photoshop.

And the weirdest news for me recently? Sarah Palin went on SNL voluntarily!!

I still haven't seen it yet.

Sforzando 10-20-2008 11:14 PM

Hi
I'm Summer
I like elephants, manatees, singing, and writing.
The weirdest thing I heard today was my hair makes me look like a skunk because my roots are showing.

Aislin 10-20-2008 11:36 PM

Hey Summer!

Writing? Yay! Of a poetic, essay, or prose-like nature?

:) Are elephants and manatees just randomly your favorite animals, or did that come about somehow. I'm not even sure what a manatee does, actually-- although I do know a rather nice manatee song. By Larry the Cucumber. Veggie Tales.

I never left my childhood. :pirate:

(Did you dye your hair black or white?)

I'm kipped out doing schoolwork, at the moment.

Sforzando 10-21-2008 12:04 AM

I write fiction, so I guess it's prose.

Well, I think elephants are cute, and manatees. Wanna know my stuffed manatee's name? Bob the Manatee. I sing that veggie tale song, only with Bob the Manatee instead of Barabara Manatee. That's why I like manatees. Because of that song. And I did a 5th grade animal report on them, and I like to be different. Where most peoople like dogs, cats, or horses, I like manatees. Oh, and I also like elephants because of the Heffalumps and Woozles song frmo Winnie the Pooh. I guess I like music alot. I love to sing and listen to music. Singing, writing, and boys are my favorite things in the world.

I dyed my hair red and my roots are showing through, so I have a brownish streak right down the middle and I had to ask my choir teacher if burgundy was an okay color to dye my hair because we aren't allowed to have crazy colors, but he disappeared and then my mom came and started telling everyone that I looked like a skunk. But I wouldn't take my hate off, so HA!
OKay, ramble over. I see you like books. What type of books?

Aislin 10-21-2008 12:51 AM

If you like writing prose, maybe you want to consider NaNoWriMo! It's starting next month-- I'm a novice as far as novel-writing goes, but I also enjoy writing. Do you usually write short stories or novel-length?

Heh! My best friend actually did a free-dance routine (roller figure skating) to the Heffalumps and Woozles song when we were in middle school. It was awesome.

Do you go to a private school? At mine, they can't really do much of anything when we dye our hair. I actually went for a deep burgundy red earlier this year, but I'm back to a nondescript dark brown. I used Shades so that it would fade nicely-- it lessens the root problem. If you're thinking of re-dyeing, you might want to give the brand a try. It makes life easier, not having to worry about roots.

I'm excessively lazy when it comes to my hair. :P

As to your question: all books! I'm pretty much indiscriminate, and I read across genres. I guess if you had to nail me down to one specific brand, though, I'd be sci/fi. I grew up in the Potter era, what can I say? From that genre, I also enjoyed Orson Scott Card, Anne McCaffrey... the works, really.

Still, I love to read almost anything! What types of books are you interested in?

Sforzando 10-21-2008 01:07 AM

I dont like to put my work on the internet, if hat's what that site is. And I write novel length. I can't and refuse to write short stories because I suck at them.

No, I go to a public school, but for choir, we can't have crazy colors like pink or blue. Because for our concerts we need to look good. I usually dye my hair reds. I found one that I like called "Paint the Town." but it's fading, and so I'm re-dying it Deep Burgundy. I had already bought the dye before our teacher told us no crazsy colors. But it's fine, he said I could dye it that color. And as for brand, I usually go for the cheapest. But I;ll try and remember that next time.

I like fantasy. I usually read things about vampires. Anything by Patricia Briggs. And I'm reading things like Pride and Prejudice, and the Phantom of the Opera. I love the romance stories.

Aislin 10-21-2008 01:35 AM

Ooooh! I'm reading Pride and Prejudice as well! I'm on chapter 55, at the moment, and dazzlingly close to the end. Are you literally reading it currently, or have you simply read it very recently?

I've never tried Patricia Briggs, mostly because I am a fish out of water when it comes to vampire novels. I know that some can be fantastic, while others are horribly dime-romance-novel-esque, and I have absolutely no idea which is which just by merit of the titles. I like my fantasy to include a good solid plot in addition to any romantic theme, and I don't want to start reading only to find that the most solid part of the plot is "busty dame rushed to a dark castle!"

Izz risky.

Lately I've been trying them out, though. My aunt recommended Charlaine Harris to me, and the first book was entertaining if only merit of not taking itself too seriously.

What is Patricia Briggs like?

As to NaNo, the website has a scramble, word count and delete policy-- no reading by anyone-- but I totally understand your reticence at posting anything online. The basic idea of NaNo is to write a 50,000 word novel in just the month of November. Just for fun. You could just as easily do by utilizing word count in office, really, but it's a fun idea and so I'm all excited about it lately!

I'm easily enthused. One might even call me simple. :)

Hmmm... I think I ramble. Sorry!

Sforzando 10-21-2008 01:41 AM

Im on like chapter 6 of the second volume. And I didn't really understand anything until about chapter 20, but its still my favorite book.

Patricia Brigg's only wrote one book that actually had to deal with the vampires. Her most popular series right now is the Mercy Thompson series. It's about a shapeshifter girl who is also a mechanic who has to help werewolves, vampires, gremlins, and ghosts. She also writes fantasy books about other things. I'm currently reading When Demons Walk. Its about a thief girl who has to pose as a Lord's mistress to help find out who is killing all these people. The killer is a demon and the thief is a magician.
I also really like Patricia Briggs because I know her personally. She goes to my church.

I want to try Charlaine Harris.

I might check out NaNoWriMo. I've always wondered what it meant when someone had NaNOWriMo in their siggy.

Aislin 10-21-2008 01:57 AM

She attends your church? That's awesome!

Hmm... I would drive most of my favorite authors absolutely crackers with questions, if they were unfortunate enough to frequently come into contact with me.

The whole mystical-being for hire edge sounds like an awesome mix of Dresden and Angel/Buffy themes, which could be definitely fun. I'm also on the lookout for female protagonists lately, so I think I might like to try out Mercy Thompson. Demon's Walk also sounds really wonderful.

Briggs has enough google hits that she seems popular-- I'll look for her in Barnes and Noble next time I'm in.

Heh... yeah, NaNoWriMo is quite, quite ubiquitous on LJ too, and I think it traveled to avatar sites from there. Wherever you are, then there it will be. Such is the way of the internet meme. :boogie:

I'm going to log off for the night to finish my reading/ research assignments for English. Catch you later? :)

P.S.--> As for where you are in Pride and Prejudice... Collins and Lady C. are quite, quite obnoxious. I would endeavor to be a house servant if only for the sake of short-sheeting their beds.

Sforzando 10-21-2008 02:12 AM

Yeah she does, and her daughter goes to my school.

I try not to ask too many questions.

She's not necesarily for hire. The first one, Moon Called, she was neighbors with a werewolf, and she had to help him save his daughter because she was technically part of his pack. The second one, Blood Bound, she owed teh vampires a favor, the third one, Iron Kissed, she had to help prove that the guy who gave her her mechanics shop was innocent. And the fourth comes out in February. Cry Wolf is really good too. And it's When Demons Walk. MY favorite was actually Hob's Bargain, but I loved them all. The Hob's Baragain was a type of Beauty and the Beast. A girl with magic was an outcast in her village, adn she had to save them, and so she goes into the mountains to ask help of a hob. And she ends up falling in love with the hob.

I hate Collins. I watched teh Modern Mormon version, and he was quite ugly and annoying, pulling that "We have been commanded to replenish the earth" card. Pft.

ill talk to you later.

Aislin 10-22-2008 01:10 AM

Beauty and the Beast was my favorite Disney movie! (Aladdin comes in at a close 2nd.) Hob's Bargain sounds good, but I think I'll start with Mercy Thompson-- I like to read series books, so that I can continue obsessively if I like the original. ^.^

I just got back from an echocardiogram at the doctor's. It's a strange process of viewing your heart which involves the use of a sticky goop and some machinery to procure an image which looks like I imagine the average panda-bear would after a run-in with a blender... black, white, some red, and just a touch of blue.

The sonographer was nice, though.

I finished Pride and Prejudice yesterday. When you finish it, let me know how you like the ending! Despite having been largely a satire, the conclusion seemed to go the route of the sentimental novel of Austen's era. I'm interested to know what you think of it.

That there was even a Mormon Movie P&P is new to me, although the imdb account of it looks entertaining. Was it any good? So far, I've seen clips of the two most commonly known movies from the book, as well as reviewed Bridget Jones' Diary to see what similarities were present.

School was almost as fun as a brain tumor, today. Luckily, I get to sleep in tomorrow. Late start. Praise Jeebus!

Sforzando 10-22-2008 01:39 AM

I love Beauty and the Beast and ALaddin! Definately my favorites. Ooh, I liked the Emporers new groove too.

ew thats weird.

I will. I didn't finish the whole movie though, just most of it. That's the only reason I even know partly whats going on.

I hate school. It's fun to sing though, and choir is the only reason I go to school.

Aislin 10-22-2008 02:04 AM

Heee! Sorry for scaring you with the Panda bit.

I go to school mostly for the company-- my friends are also the type who love to sing-- and so that I don't grow up to be a strange cat lady. I may yet, despite my hard effort.

Top Kid Movies Which I Love:
#1-- Matilda
#2-- Beauty and the Beast
#3-- Aladdin
#4-- Shrek
#5-- Who Framed Roger Rabbit

--> Does that last one count as a kid's movie? I'm not sure. But that's my list. :)

Sforzando 10-22-2008 02:10 AM

Lol. It's ok.

And yes, I think it does.

My favorites are:

1. Swan Princess
2. Anastasia
3. Emperor's New Groove
4. Beauty and the BEast
5. Aladdin
6. Fern Gully
7. Thumbelina.
*Bursts out singing Let Me Be Your Wings*
I also go to school for the company. Oh, and that reminds me. I have to go tell a friend that my other friend doesn't hate her and says it's okay if we go on a triple date. Yay, for drama! *rolls eyes.*

Aislin 10-22-2008 02:28 AM

Ugh! I hate drama in school. I try not to allow it, but with a horde of teenagers that's not really plausible. I've settled for singing in a chirpy tone and pretending not to hear when people try to involve me in it-- now they don't as much.

But occasionally you have to put up with it, to be a good friend.

Good luck with kicking the drama! Hopefully the triple-date won't be awkward.

Oooooh!, I can't believe that I forgot Fern Gully, Anastasia and Thumbelina! I wanted to marry half of the characters in them when I was young, so it's rude of me to have not remembered.

I briefly wanted to be Thumbelina, also. The beetle in the movie scared me, though.

I also loved Once Upon A Forest. I was an adventure-inclined, nature-y type of kid. I adored [i]Pocahontas[i], too, until I saw the second movie and became jaded.

Just Say No to John Rolfe.

Sforzando 10-22-2008 02:46 AM

Lol. I'm sure it will be fine.

I just had a conversation today about movies I hadn't seen in awhile. Because for some reason, I was thinking of the name Sawyer, and that reminded me of the girl cat in Cats Can't Dance. And I was like "OMG! I HAVEN"T SEEN THAT IN FOREVAHHHHH!!" *yes, with that prissy girl tone, too. i do that sometimes.*

I know, the beetle scared me too. But I loved Iago from Aladdin, and GIlbert Godfried (Gotfried, Gotfreid? Gottfreid? Well, you get teh picture.) But anyway, he does the voice for both the beetle and Iago.

I used to have all these Animated classics movies, and the Pocahontas one was so sad. But I do like the Disney version, however bad they scewed history. I usually dont watch movies after the disney classics. They tend to ruin them. However, I liked Mulan I and II.

Aislin 10-22-2008 02:59 AM

Do you mean Cats Don't Dance? I love that movie! Last year, people in my school started to use the phrase "That's big," and I would break into an obnoxious rendition of "Big and Loud" every single time.

Aaaaah, I miss being tiny. Movies were so good back then.

I actually never saw Mulan II. I've been avoiding "2nd generation" Disney movies after the ruination of Pocahontas 2 and The Little Mermaid 2. I'm glad to hear that it's good-- I'll look for it now.

I go absolutely insane when I recognize the voices from Disney cartoons. There's a 1940s movie that has the voice actor for the caterpillar from Alice In Wonderland in it... I was distracted the entire first time that I saw that movie, just trying to figure out where I knew the voice from. I'd almost swear that I watched a clip of a movie with Mrs. Potts in it today... and I was very upset when I found out that Mel Gibson was the voice actor for John Smith. I'm afraid of Mel Gibson.

Gah!

... Sorry. Voice actors. They show up everywhere. Drive me nuts! :)

---

Oooh, also-- thanks to Disney, absolutely everyone on any gameshow cannot for the life of them figure out who Pocahontas was really married to. It makes me giggle. They did skew the history something awful. :P

Sforzando 10-22-2008 03:12 AM

Yes, I mean Cats Dont Dance. I used to watch that all the time. That little girl though makes me want to bite her head off like those porr animal crackers she killed.

I love movies from our young age.

Wasn't she married to that Rolfe dude? Like, she went to America after John Smith disappeared, and she thought he was dead, and so she met some other dude and got married to him, then she found out that John Smith was still alive, and she got really sick and died.

Aislin 10-22-2008 03:19 AM

That's the full version of events as from Pocahontas II. In real life, though, Pocahontas was just a kid when she met John Smith. There was no romantic relationship of which I'm aware. She ended up marrying John Rolfe, who was a tobacco farmer.

Then she tried to "reform" the Native Americans to a more orthodox way of living, which saddens me and so does not comply with a "Colors of the Wind" lifestyle!

I spurn her.

Gagh. I have 5 pages to edit for journalism tomorrow. Tiny text and bad punctuation. We're sending our newspaper to the printer, so it's all got to be picture perfect.

What's your normal homework load like?

Sforzando 10-22-2008 03:41 AM

Well, I knew she was a kid, but I never saw Pocohontas II. I saw a movie taht was supposed to be accurate, and it never said that there was romance between her and Smith, just that he taught her to read and all that. ANd he was much much older than her. Wasn't she kidnapped at one point too?

I usually have no homework. Either that, or I have a little bit of chemistry, and some reading.

Oh, wait, I lied. I'm supposed to practice singing every night and read, but I do that anyway, so i dont count it as homework.

Aislin 10-22-2008 03:56 AM

Oh, how I envy you! I have a fair bit of homework, but I don't like doing it. I have spent years perfecting a strong work ethic: I quite strongly avoid my homework, procrastinating until the absolute last moment and then staying up all night to complete it. It's a healthy system.

I also have healthy eating habits. It's 9pm and I'm eating Raisin Bran. :D

How long have you been on Menewsha?

Sforzando 10-22-2008 04:04 AM

Lol. I put off the things I dont like. Or I simply dont do them. [That does not affect my grades at all.] Well, I do the worksheets, but like I didn't want to read ROmeo and Juliet or Lord of the Flies, and so I skim. I skim enough to get it done.

Or Ill put it offf until really late and just play on teh computer all day.

It's 9 pm and I'm eating nothing. Lol. I've drank like 10 glasses of water since I got home though.

Since june or July-ish. of this year. you?

Oh, I thought I had to read till chapter 7 on lord of the flies due today, but its due friday. that sucks. I skimmed all that for nothing.
