Are you implying there are people who like that song?

Cardinal Biggles 01-25-2011 04:48 AM

Cherry. Let me but it this way. It's like the effects from the original Doctor Who.

*sneaks on in again*

Cherry Who? 01-25-2011 05:29 AM

All I can ever think of when I hear that song is the literal video version.

Cardinal Biggles 01-25-2011 05:33 AM

The video definitely makes the song worse. It's just. What on earth is going on there? The director had a really weird Public school experience, I reckon.

Cherry Who? 01-25-2011 06:00 AM

I think it's supposed to convey that the principal/teacher/whatever is lusting after her underaged students. But the way they chose to convey that was pretty damn weird, yeah. I see what they were going for with the surrealism, they just... missed. The way she looks also makes me laugh. There's a picture that my grandma has of my aunt in highschool and she looks so much like that. Being the favorite daughter, my aunt was taken to a really expensive photography studio. She had the feathered hair, too much makeup, then was surrounded by a sea of chiffon and is looking off to the side really seriously and the photos got that dumb cheesecloth "soft" effect. So now it's incredibly dated and awkward. Meanwhile, my mother got the cheaper standard photography, and it's significantly less embarrassing and dated. You can tell it's the 80s, but it's not "EIGHTIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Cardinal Biggles 01-25-2011 06:07 AM

Oh god. I was just juuuust looking at a family portrait we had done when I was 9. My dad and his glasses look so nineties. I can't imagine they were stylish even then. And then here's me. I look like a Bond villain in the making. I've got a prop and a slightly deranged look on my face. My mum looks like a fox, though.

Cherry Who? 01-25-2011 06:18 AM

I only had three professional portraits taken as a child. But there is a series of photos of my parents playing with me in the yard when I was a toddler. My dad had the goofiest hair ever. He was going bald, but he had longish hair (just above his shoulders), and my mom had 80s bangs. The portrait I had taken when I was 8ish is so ridiculous. I was wearing this dress my grandma got for me from a thrift store. It was my favorite dress. It was light blue with white polka dots and had this weird collar... Sort of like someone took a circle of fabric, cut a head hole in it, sewed some ruffles on the edges, and just sewed it onto the dress. I'm wearing a fabric headband and I'm grinning with missing teeth. I guess it's kind of cute/funny.

Cardinal Biggles 01-25-2011 06:22 AM

Watching that literal video. I think I may have seen it before. Oh, that Bonnie Tyler....

Cherry Who? 01-25-2011 06:27 AM

It's quite funny. Might even be better than the literal Safety Dance.

Cardinal Biggles 01-25-2011 06:31 AM

Safety dance, yay! Makes me miss the Ren Faire.

Ok, what's going on in your sig?

Cherry Who? 01-25-2011 06:34 AM

There is a show called Dexter. Just "Dexter."
Lead character, Dexter
Dexter's nemesis for a few seasons
Dexter's Laboratory, a children's cartoon in which the titular character is always being foiled by his sister, Deedee.

It's really only funny if you're familiar with both shows, but I thought I'd explain it anyway.

Cardinal Biggles 01-25-2011 06:39 AM

And the piece of wood comes in how?

Cherry Who? 01-25-2011 06:41 AM

It's a box, but it'd take so long to explain that it wouldn't even be remotely funny, and it'd also spoil a bit of the show if you ever decide to watch (and you should, because it's one of the best shows ever).

Cardinal Biggles 01-25-2011 06:46 AM

A box the exact colour of heartache
That really didn't have much bearing on the conversation, nor did it need to be said. But there you have it.

Cherry Who? 01-25-2011 07:00 AM

Sure, we'll go with that.

KatMagenta 01-25-2011 01:08 PM

There are people who don't (at least secretly) like cheesy 80's music? I feel sorry for them...

Benedict Cumberbatch was on Alan Carr Chatty Man last night, I'm going to attempt to use 4oD to watch it. Hopefully it won't pull it's trick of freezing or skipping so badly it's unwatchable but only after I've sat through all of the adverts.

Just wanted to show off.. My friend found two sheets of these stickers and gave them to me! :D

robinhoodfan13 01-25-2011 09:05 PM

....Oh STICKERS!

Cherry Who? 01-25-2011 09:32 PM

Kat - I can take it in small doses. Although I do like Never Gonna Give You Up in a completely serious, non-ironic way. I realize it's corny, but I just like it. The rickrolling fad made me so happy because then I could listen to it without being judged. Just "OH, HAHA, I GOT RICKROLLED, I HAVE TO WATCH THE WHOLE THING NOW and I wasn't just dancing a little" I also love Tainted Love, but I don't think that's considered too terrible.

Ljos - Those. Are. Awesome. What are you gonna put them on?

ljosberinn 01-25-2011 10:48 PM

I know right? Well, I already have Davros on my laptop as it fell off the sheet while in my bag and got stuck to the laptop anyway. I may just put a couple more on that, dunno about the rest.

And ugh, cheesy 80s music. I was just talking to someone else about this today actually. Or yesterday. Anyway.. my partner really likes a lot of 80s music, but it's the good kind of 80s - Depeche Mode, Soft Cell (Tainted Love), that kind of stuff, which is stuff I can easily bear. But the poppy stuff.. I can watch the literal versions of Total Eclipse of the Heart and Take on Me, but that's about it. :P

Lost in Austen 01-25-2011 11:02 PM

Love the stickers!!

Lawl. My brother just bought a TV and he looked at the remote and said "I am disappoint. What is the use of a TV remote if it doesn't have a CAL button??" Not quite accurate, but still, he gets points for relating everyday conversations to Doctor Who. :XD

KatMagenta 01-26-2011 10:30 PM

Heh, every time I look at the stickers I pick a new favourite. It's the Ood at the moment.

The National Television Awards were tonight. I'll not say anything about the winners in case anyone wants to watch the show later (the list is here if you just want to read them). The opening of the show was Doctor Who themed with Matt Smith and Dermot O'Leary in the TARDIS which was pretty amusing.

Cardinal Biggles 01-26-2011 11:53 PM

Oh shoot! I forgot about that. I'm still trying to locate good footage of the BCAs. Was it worth the watch, at least?

KatMagenta 01-27-2011 12:04 AM

I'm not a massive fan of awards shows to be honest but Dermot wasn't a bad host and the music acts weren't too offensive. A lot of the awards were soap based so they didn't really mean anything to me but that's hardly their fault if that's the audience they're catering for.

Stephen Fry was wonderful as ever of course.
