It seemed a bit silly that the Doctor wasn't more careful while breaking all the glass and mirrors. I was convinced he was going to cut himself on one of the jagged edges while pushing things out of the window. These are the things I notice while managing to miss major plot points.

Anyway, what I am saying: PIRATES IN SPACE. Lily Cole being all eerie and floaty. It could have been terribly camp and entirely fillery but it managed to rise above that. It'll be difficult to watch again knowing that nobody is really in any danger but one of my criticisms would be that I didn't really feel that much of a threat in the first place. Maybe it would have been more effective to have less crew members to start with or have people mysteriously disappearing off screen.

Amy did seem to stop CPR early but I felt the episode was trying to give the impression that the Doctor appeared to have given up even earlier hence Rory putting his faith in Amy. I might be reading too much into facial expressions there.

Eye patch Lady and her mystical hatches return too. Hurrah!

I thought when the Doctor reset the timeline in The Big Bang and brought back people who had disappeared, like Amy's parents, the Rory who got brought back would have been the original human one who got erased from time (although he remembers being an Auton somehow).

Looking forward to Neil Gaiman's episode next week. I will possibly lock my flatmate in his room and turn my phone off to avoid these reoccurring interruptions.

Season 5 finale spoilersX

No, Rory's human now. When the tardis went boom, everything was undone. So Amy has parents as she should, and Rory is back to being human. It's sort of like in season 3 when the Master took over the world for a year and then it was all undone? Only the people at the heart of it (Martha and her family, the Doctor, Jack) remembered it. Amy, Rory, the Doctor and River can remember it, but it was all undone. Rory's human again.

What got me with the glass and mirrors was... he left the broken shards inside the ship. He broke the mirror, yes... into a bunch of tiny mirrors that are still totally reflective and still inside the ship. Ugh. He should have thrown the entire thing overboard. That made so little sense. Also, like you said, broken glass... bitch gonna get cut.

It did seem like it was going to be a campy filler, but you're right, they did a great job keeping it from it. Moffat continues to impress me.

What I don't get is why the Doctor gave up. Also, he should totally know CPR. I'm pretty sure he's done CPR at some point in the series before, but I can't really remember. He knows CPR though, he has to. And he also knows that a tiny bit of drowning never hurt anyone. But he was just like "Nope, done, he's dead," and then Amy did it too. Ugh. He's not a tin dog, okay? He's Rory! :gonk:

Forgot to mention the eyepatch lady. What is everyone's theories on that? I thought it was River, but we paused on it, and with this giant HD TV, you can tell it's not River. Does kind of look like her, but it's not river. Anyway, the slidy door hatch thing reminds me of the kinds they have on solitary confinement doors at mental hospitals. But so help me if they do a "this whole season was in Amy's head!" thing, I will smack Moffat quite hard.

Ah, found the perfect clip with Tate and Tennant on Norton. They're talking about weird quirks/habits.

He just gets so EXCITED about the socks! :rofl:

Yeah, I kind of put them on my wishlist at modcloth, just to remind myself they do. But I already have a couple of matryoshka things, I don't want to do over do it.

With regard to the socks-- my crush on Tennant just got a wee bit bigger. Like the Grinch's heart or a marshmallow in the microwave, and it was all warm and snuggly-feeling. I'm OCD about socks too. Can you say kismet? :heart:

I finally got around to watching the episode today after my kid cousins went to bed. I was babysitting, and my auntie DVR's the Doctor. Thank heavens!

Why was the Captain's son unable to be removed from life support? Theoretically, Rory was unable to be removed because he would be immediately put back into a drowning state. But why could the rest of the crew be removed from the odd life-tube while the boy wasn't? Was the coughing a serious form of consumption or something? Theoretically, he could have been removed and eventually become healthy, right? Coughing isn't immediately life-threatening...

My inner free-spirit was so gleeful to find a shipful of 17th century pirates sent into outerspace on their own ship.

As for the eyepatch woman... hee... okay, I cheated and looked up info. So far, she has spoken only:

In regards to the captain's son:
Well, he was ill (he had some form of life-threatening disease/fever/something), fatally so, so he couldn't be removed from the life support. The other crew members could because they were (presumably) only slightly cut/bleeding.

Rory and pirates and stuff!X

I'm confused still about Rory, because didn't he actually mention in the first two episodes how he could still remember the whole waiting for Amy as a plastic Roman centurion? So he's not plastic anymore, but he still remembers it? That bothered me a lot during the episode too, whether he was plastic or not and how it's never been really really properly explained.

Still, the main point is, Amy looking gorgeous in pirate costume (:drool:) and 17th century pirates SAILING AROUND SPACE ASDKLGHASDMFN. Sorry, but.. pirates and space are just two of the most awesome things ever, and combining them? My heart is soaring with glee.

The mirror shards were a bit strange and I agree the Doctor wasn't being as careful as he should be.. also I was really confused why everyone was so ridiculously slow to act when the siren sprang from the crown and took Rory. Also, how were everyone else put in life support and not the Doctor, Amy and the Captain? She didn't even seem to know they were there? Also also, while I understand it will get really boring for the viewers every single time people who have no idea about aliens or spaceships come into the TARDIS, but I did think the Captain was a bit too blasé about the whole thing.. he's from the 17th century, he's never seen anything even close to this kind of technology, and he was just "oh, so this is how you steer, compass, etc. Cool."

Finally, the boy had some kind of fatal fever (fevers were often fatal in those days, after all) while the other shipmates only had tiny cuts that would easily heal, so it does make sense he was still in that life support thing. Though I was hoping the "siren" could actually heal them.. surely she could heal a fever?

I agree with Cherry too that they gave up on the CPR way too early, the Doctor seemed resigned from the start, which is not really like him. And I agree also that I will do my best to kick Moffat if it turns out this whole series was in Amy's head/dream/whatever. That would be such a cheap conclusion, and anyway they did a "restart" on time in the last season as well. But I am really curious about eyepatch woman now, as well as the pregnancy.


Sorry, only spoilers for now.. I'm going to watch the video with the socks as soon as it finishes loading, but that might take a while.. damn internet connection. *grumbles*

Yeah, the fact that Amy, Rory, and the Doctor just wake up lying on the floor and not on life support like the others really irks me. This episode definitely had far too many loopholes. But it wasn't actually written by Steven Moffat, if I remember aright. He normally doesn't make such obvious mistakes in his writing!

But when he died, he was in the dream. As far as we know, he didn't die in the waking world, he just ceased to even exist all around. It was said that the only way to get out of the dream was to die in it, so dying in the dream wouldn't kill you for real.

The Doctor said that Toby had typhoid fever and likely only had a few weeks left to live. The crew, on the other hand, mostly just had little cuts and bruises and other non-serious issues, so they could be taken off without a problem. Toby, however, would have died shortly after.

I assume you mean because Centurion Rory was a creation by the Nestene taken from Amy's subconcious? I have no clue, and neither does anyone else, apparently, because all the Doctor Who wikia says on that is

I could be wrong, but I think what possibly happens when the Siren touched everyone and brought them over was that they were all transported onto the floor, and then she came back over herself and brought them there, which explains why she came into the sick bay for no apparent reason right after Amy, the Doctor, and the Captain arrived. It's possible that some of the other crew members had also escaped as the three did, but since they had to wait hours, even days before the Amy, The Doctor, and the Captain showed up, the siren probably just eventually got them and put them on life support. Since Rory had lungs full of water, he obviously wasn't going anywhere, so the siren was able to get to him right away, so he didn't die. At least, that's the only explanation that makes sense. They never expressly made any of that clear, it's just what I assumed while watching the episode - that she doesn't transport anyone directly to the life support. They're taken to whatever part of the alien ship is overlapping with the part of the real ship that they're on. The window they were standing by was looking out right at where they had just been, wasn't it? So they jumped dimensions, but they didn't actually move.

And yes, the Captain was way to impassive about the technology. :lol:

The Doctor said at one point that the Siren was not a doctor, she was just an automated system. The real doctors had died, but she was still running. She would automatically bring people into the sick bay, but she had no ability to treat them. The only reason they could even hypothetically stay alive was due to the life support machines which were still running. She didn't control those or keep them alive herself, she just put people there. Also, Toby didn't just have a fever like you get when you have the flu. The Doctor said he had Typhoid Fever.

The Curse of the Black Spot was by Stephen Thompson. I knew it was somebody Thompson. He wrote The Blind Banker (or 'Baker' as I typed) for Sherlock too.

I started typing this ages ago then got distracted by the Discontinuity section on the TARDIS wiki so Cherry has already covered this. Since Toby had Typhoid fever and the crew were killed by Earth-bacteria/germs/whatever-they-said then the Siren probably can't cure him but he's more likely to survive with her assistance.

I was assuming Zea was referring to Rory being erased from time after taking the shot for the Doctor. I just guessed that when time got reset then that adventure with Amy, Rory and the Doctor would never have happened for Rory to have died in the first place even if they 'remember' it later.

Ah, I seem to have somehow missed the part where she wasn't actually able to heal them. So she's.. basically just the anaesthetic? :P And I thought she came into the sick bay because they tried to move one of the sick guys (I can't remember now if it was Rory or the Captain's son) and the alarm went off? I would have thought that yeah, they were transported to the same part of the ship that they'd been on, but that she would've been transported with them.. not that she would be transported to a completely different part of the ship just to hang out, or whatever it was she was doing before the alarm went off. It would make more sense, no?
Anyway, I guess this episode just has a few gaps and I doubt they'll explain most of them. Not that I really mind, what with the awesome pirate costumes. >.>


Sorry Biggles! I feel a bit bad about all the spoilers going on myself..
I just had a little feast for myself - cold chicken, houmus, olives, bread, cheese and red wine - and watched a little Torchwood. Mmmmm. ^________^ (Though I must add that it wasn't the best choice of viewing material while eating as I watched the Small Worlds episode, the one with the faeries.. who make you choke on rose petals.. :x )

I loved when Digital Spy would post however many little things that would happen in the next Torchwood and one was a red herring because it would never be the one you thought.
