Oh! I have seen that!

Cherry Who? 11-09-2012 12:59 AM

Better writing is another thing that would have benefited nine. Season 1 was so painfully corny at times. [lol]

Bearzy 11-09-2012 01:05 AM

I think that's one of the things I liked about it. It was painfully corny, but it was hilarious. So bad it was good, I guess.

The_Crow 11-09-2012 01:18 AM

Nine did something that Eight didn't do (Yes, you can blame the 'half American' influence all you want because McGann, my 'Foppish Doctor' was amazing)... he got the series restarted sucessfully.

In the beginning they were undecided if it was a 'children's show' or if it was a 'family show' (PG vs PG-13). It took them a whilie to settle. Both Mr. Eccleston and Mr. Smith suffer from the same thing: not bad acting, but bad writing, be it cheeziness or nothing but explosivies and catch phrases.

RTD had the formula settled. "Bad Wolf". "Torchwood". "Mr. Saxon". "There's Something on Your Back/Rose Flashes/Medusa Cascade/Doctor Donna" Every episode had SOMETHING and the audience of course would catch on a few episodes before the main characters which would make us feel 'smart'.

Moffat is good at individual short tales but not at arcs. Doesn't get the 'arc' thing down at all. At first it was "IT'S GOING TO BE HUGE AND WE'RE NOT TELLING YOU WHAT IT IS!" and then it's "IT'S GOING TO BE HUGE, THE PONDS ARE GOING TO DIE!" (they outstayed their duration... companion/doctor combo gets ONE series/season!) now "IT'S GOING TO BE HUGE THE DOCTOR WILL HAVE A NEW COMPANION" followed by "IT'S GOING TO BE THE 50th ANNIVERSARY AND HUGE!". No sense for subtlety and building up!

Bearzy 11-09-2012 01:25 AM

Man, bad wolf is by far one of my favourite things in the 'verse. It was so cleverly tied in.

KatMagenta 11-09-2012 01:36 AM

If there are any more "Doctor? Doctor Who?" references shoehorned in I might actually snap.

Bearzy 11-09-2012 01:42 AM

Yeah, the question is a little over. But I have to admit, they did something right with River Song. I watch for her like I used to watch for Captain Jack.

Y'know.. I had started to kind of notice that... But I wasn't sure if it was just me.

Cherry Who? 11-09-2012 07:03 AM

Yes, thank you. At first I liked Moffat, but the formula is wearing on me. Like you said, he lacks any subtlety. The stories take themselves too seriously and aren't deserving of it at all. RTD's stories fell flat plenty of times, but they never pretended to be anything more than a silly sci fi show. Moffat thinks he's got a masterpiece every time, it seems like.

And yeah, "Doctor who?" is cute once in a while, but it needs to be used sparingly. Like once every few years. Doing it in every episode is getting annoying. Yeah. We get it. We know why the show is called that. Yes. We've understood that since the show came out.

The_Crow 11-09-2012 08:59 AM

Even in the second episode during 'the end of the world' you can clearly overhear the aliens saying "It's the Bad Wolf situation..." and the giant bomb that jack has to be riding on? There's a still of him on it and one of the white stamps is "Bad Wolf" during the "The Doctor Dances" after saving all the "Are you my mummy?" people.

Also after being knighted then exiled by Queen Victoria... Torchwood was mentioned in every episode of series 2 (and even on the weakest link in Series One when it was just referred to as 'An Old Earth Institute' and the guy said 'Touchdown'). Even with The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit two parter the captain logs in that he is doing this for "The Torchwood Archive".

There's even a VOTE SAXON [X] poster on a door containing a multitude of flyers itself right before Jack and Ten reunite again. THAT was brilliant thinking on someone's part. Took a whole two seconds and WOW. I want to give that person a hug.
...

On a different note I do agree with John Simm's idea for a Darker Master to come back. RTD wanted a 'giggling lunatic' so that is what he gave him, according to Simm. Overall it worked out pretty well, except the bleached hair got mixed reviews and that was even Simm's own idea/instinct. He said next time he won't go with his own instinct (on appearance!). But since Eleven mostly holds everything in, it would be great to have a 'There WILL BE BLOOD' Master. He had to later re-confirm that there were no OFFICIAL plans for his return, but just his open-ness to it (given that Nine and Eleven are the only Doctors not to meet their Best Enemy and with the 50th coming up and all).

That's in an episode of Torchwood, isn't it? The episode where Toshiko and Jack get sent back in time? I jumped up and down when I saw it.

Yes, I thought I mentioned that, but that was in Torchwood indeed :) So little time and effort and so BRILLIANT. [squee]

Bearzy 11-10-2012 09:18 AM

Yes! I freaking loved it. [squee]

The_Crow 11-10-2012 09:43 AM

This is what RTD got that Moffat doesn't... you don't need to think every episode is your ultimate masterpiece with explosions, catch phrases, etc...

Fans really appreciate the little things, too. He was a good writer, but as a show runner... I mean... correct me if I'm wrong, but I really don't see any formula other than "IT'S GONNA BE BIG!" A 2-3 year old thinks that way when they try to make a lego tower as tall as they are that eventually falls over. It is a formula, but a more immature one that in a way is an insult to Doctor Who fans.

He doesn't treat the Sherlock fans like that. It's like he's on/off, only capable of one or the other.

Why do so many Whovians like Sherlock anyways? The fine detail, putting together the intricate puzzle. We don't get that as much in Doctor Who anymore...

Bearzy 11-10-2012 09:59 AM

I love sherlock! But for the funnies. I love anything that makes me laugh... And then cry later on when that laughter becomes a painful reminder of a breakup or death.

CelesteStar 11-10-2012 10:17 AM

Hello, new fan of Doctor Who reporting in~ XD

The_Crow 11-10-2012 10:18 AM

CelesteStar- -Bows and kisses the back of your hand- Welcome, dear. How much have you seen? Who is your Doctor? Who is your Master? Who is your Companion?

CelesteStar 11-10-2012 10:42 AM

I have seen a few of Eleven and some of Ten. My favorite is Ten, hands down. My favorite Companions are Rose Tyler and Donna Noble. XD

The_Crow 11-10-2012 10:55 AM

Ten does seem to be a bit of a fan favourite. It is a combination of having the 'formula' down. With Nine's one season they were still trying to figure out basically whether the show was PG or PG-13... Eleven is still a good Doctor, my favourite episodes of his happen to be his enterace episode, and the ones written by other people, "the Lodger" which was written before they even knew who was cast, and "The Doctor's Wife" written by Neil Gaiman who was really thinking out of the box which was really refreshing to the show, something in needed desperately... but what I was ranting and raving about above was that Eleven suffers from the silver-medal show runner, as the original two quit when Ten did =/ The man is a good WRITER, but he seems to put all the subtlety into Sherlock and all the BIG and overused catch phrases into Doctor Who =/

What are some of your favourite episodes with Ten?

CelesteStar 11-10-2012 11:17 AM

Hm... I really like Doomsday. It was really sad, but I loved it. And "Girl in the Fireplace" and "Midnight". I haven't watched many Doctor Who episodes yet, only five or six and I'm already hooked.

Bearzy 11-10-2012 08:02 PM

Girl in the fireplace was really good.

CelesteStar 11-11-2012 02:20 AM

Yes, yes it was. XD

Connielass 11-11-2012 03:46 AM

Although I have to say, I really really liked Asylum of the Daleks.

SpoilersX

I haven't seen any episodes AFTER Asylum, so I'm wondering how different it will be now that he's completely wiped all memory of himself from the Dalek hive-mind

Cherry Who? 11-11-2012 06:01 AM

Asylum was very good. I don't think the season's going to live up to its standard though. [no]

Bearzy 11-11-2012 08:09 AM

The episodes so far are pretty good.

SPOILERX

I'll be really quite happy to see an episode without Amy and Rory though. Not that I didn't love Rory to bits, but their story was finished before this season began.
