Hey guys, how's it going?
|
Yo! Hi there!
|
So I'm, like... digging this season so far?
I actually really enjoyed this last episode. I could even go as far as to say that it felt like an RTD episode. I felt like we got some more personality from Clara, and the introduction of Mr. Pink was promising. I liked that he was kind of neurotic and self-doubting without being an archetype of awkward dweeb (coughrory). Clara and he both felt like people in the episode. Further, I felt like the episode didn't take itself too seriously, as Moffat stories tend to do. It felt like more of a fun RTD romp. I was really peeved when they completely wiped the Doctor from the Daleks' collective memory, but I like what they did with it in this episode. I think it gave a new angle to explore the relationship between the Daleks and the Doctor, along with their similarities and differences (not a new theme - just look at the S1 episode Dalek - "you would make a good Dalek"). Also furthering the related theme of whether or not the Doctor is as Good and Just as he likes to think he is, or if he's flawed and abuses his power sometimes (it's not as if all pre-Moffat Doctor was "The Man Who Never Would" - 9 and 10 killed too). Mm, I'm happy. Thank you, Peter Capaldi. I give you full credit. |
I've had similar feelings. So far this season, there has been a lot of enjoy. And agreed about the Doctor/Dalek relationship; I like it when the Doctor has soul-searching to do.
Peter Capaldi is a charismatic actor to watch. His version of the Doctor settled into a grumpy/serious person very quickly after his "flirts with dinosaurs" introduction though. I hope we get more moments like that, because they remind us that the Doctor really is an alien with hundreds of years of experience across time and space, not just a grumpy old man with a magic box. [lol] Then again, we got more madcap silliness than I could stand with 11, so this grumpiness is a refreshing change of pace. 12 reminds me of the few episodes I've seen of the 1st Doctor, and the way 9 was at the beginning of the reboot. Every change of face brings out different traits in the Doctor, but they're all part of who he is overall. Clara was very pleasantly human in this episode. It may be my anti-11 bias, but she never really worked as a companion for me. She seems to have matured in her own right though, and her chemistry with 12 works quite well, so I like her much better now. I feel cautiously hopeful about Mr. Pink, hopefully he won't be a Mickey or Rory repeat. I don't trust Moffat much, so I don't want to get my hope too high about anything. [sweat] |
i agree with cherry about the over all feel and i like it! and i think it's funny what you said, chex, about him, Twelve, being a lot like Nine because i was talking to a friend about it and he really is... which might be why i like him already. Nine was always pretty intense and i get that from Twelve too.
i have never really like clara, except when she was the dalek/oswin oswald, soooo i love that Twelve was like bashing her this last episode [lol] made me like him so much more! i do find her less annoying and i'm not sure why though. pink doesn't seem like a rory or mickey, i definitely don't get that dweeby feel like cherry mentioned. seems more like he might be a bit deeper as mickey and rory were pretty easy to understand. i just hope they don't turn pink into something stupid, ya know? he has a lot of potential |
I was definitely surprised to hear Clara was leaving. My initial reaction was "What, already? Didn't we just get her?" And... then I remembered that no, she's been here for a while now. And fantastic companions like Martha and Donna only got one season. Clara just hadn't had any personality for us to get to know her from so I... sort of forgot she's been here for a bit now. [lol] But maybe her characterization is going to be redeemed here at the end. Maybe she'll finally be great. Lord knows my problem is not with Jenna-Louise Coleman - she's done all she can with what she's been given.
|
i haven't seen her in anything else so i'm not sure if it's the acting or the writing... i think the general consensus is that it's the writing hahaha
|
Nothing about her acting has stood out to me as flawed. Likewise, I have no problems with Matt Smith, though I have problems a-plenty with 11.
Though I do suppose that Capaldi is illustrating that being actor does not necessarily mean you have to shut up and go with what you're given. On the other hand, Capaldi has a lot of directing experience, where Smith and Coleman are both rather young and inexperienced. They don't have the same sort of respect that someone like Capaldi has. |
I haven't had a chance to watch any Twelve yet.
All I can say is, whether or not I was really fond of them, here's to the hope that everyone who was on cast during Eleven's tenure goes on to bigger and better things. |

Hello Sweetie! |
I only know Jenna-Louise otherwise as the voice of Melia in Xenoblade Chronicles. [lol]
Robot of Sherwood was a lot of fun and Listen looks like it's going to be suitably scurry. /deep analysis |
Robot of Sherwood was kind of good, but it seemed like it tried to cram in too much stuff, and it didn't really start being a proper episode until they got captured. I really liked Clara in this episode though, even if she was kind of shown as being "romancable" by every male character she encountered.

*spins* I is a TARDIS!
|
I like the addition of the hourglass.
|
^^ Thanks! I thought it'd be a nice touch.
|
It definitely makes it!

Anyone around? ::wanders in the general direction of the pool:: |
I'm around. What did everyone think of Flatline? I thought it was a surprisingly good episode, and enjoyed it a lot.

Hey all.

I find it especially odd as I feel Amy made more of an impression and I never even liked Amy. But like... at least Amy was there. She had a definite personality. You could imagine scenarios and definitively say "Amy wouldn't do that," or "Amy would do that." What would and wouldn't Clara do or say? Who knows? She feels like a placeholder, the sort of blank slate you're supposed to project yourself onto a la Twilight. Which is likely Moffat's exact intention given his oh so pleasant opinions on his female, teenage fanbase.
Let's not get into RTD companions, though. Not even comparable. Martha and Donna both made such amazing, lasting, strong impressions despite only having a season each. I miss Martha and Donna so much. I thought Flatline was pretty fun! Had its "wat" moments, but I didn't feel it went beyond what I find acceptable for Doctor Who. At least it wasn't a newly hatched dragon laying an egg bigger than itself. I'm still baffled by that. |
So. Do any of you have any interesting Missy theories? I remember there being talk of The Master returning in this season. I suppose we'll see if that comes to be or not.
Oddly enough, I had a Doctor Who themed dream last night that involved the Valeyard. |
She's clearly Mary Poppins.
|
Honestly I'm not even remotely interested in finding out who she is. They could completely drop that plot and I wouldn't mind at all. Just feels like cliche Moffat. Slap an eyepatch on her and we're back a couple years.
